Please reference the above article for the rest of the story.
The North Lyon County Fire Protection District received a report of a commercial on June 11, 2010 at 4:11 pm.
Upon arrival North Lyon Firefighters (the only two firefighters on duty) found multiple storage units fully involved.
A remark was made "There's only two of you?" to the responding firefighters.
The two local responding firefighters began offensive attack and mutual aide was requested.
Unlike mutual aide from other areas, Fernley response from other areas have a 30 to 40 minute delay time.
The first units to arrive to assist North Lyon Firefighters arrived... forty two minutes after initial call for aid.
Although Fernley has two fire stations, only one station is maned with two firefighters per shift.
The lack of resources for Fernley stems from the poor economy and the Fire District tax structure being restricted to .17 to serve a community of 18,000 that includes residential, commercial -(including our warehouse district), and potential rail incidents that could occur from tracks that run through the city.
NLCFPD began as an all volunteer fire department, with the exception of the Fire Chief. The citizens of the NLCFPD voted to increase the tax rate to $0.1799 (per every $100 of assessed living area value) in 1989. During this time, the Department was receiving approximately 300 emergency calls annually. Funding has been left unchanged since the last tax increase in 1989.
Today, the NLCFPD is responding to approximately 2,400 emergency calls annually for a community of approximately 19,000 residents.
With all the growth and expansion to the area in recent years, funding has been left unchanged since the last tax increase in 1989.
Other responding units to the 3C Storage included
Reno units= two engines (eight personnel) one battalion chief
Story County= one engine(two firefighters) one battalion chief/one captain
Central Lyon County Fire=one engine (two firefighters) 1 tender (1 firefighter) one captain
North Lyon Fire (two staff firefighters) 1 engine/1 tender
Arrival Times for responding units
4:11 pm - Engine 61 dispatched (2-man)
4:18 pm - Engine 61 on scene with paramedic unit (2-man) and advises size up (one section of storage unit fully engulfed)
4:20 pm - Engine 61 request two water tenders from our local district and one tender from outside resource, an engine from Storey County and resources from Lyon County Central District
4:35 pm - Water tender (1-man) from our district arrived on scene
4:40 pm - Storey county engine arrived on scene.
NLCFPD had no battalion chief or fire chief on scene and were very short handed with crews. A Rehab unit was dispatched later on.
North Lyon would like to thank, Reno fire, central fire as well as Story county fire for their response. NLCFPD would also like to thank the city of Fernley for providing equipment to assist firefighters.
Thank you to the North Lyon Firefighters for your dedication and service.
