Auto makers have a huge inventory of pickups and SUVs that they cannot sell. It's like turning a large ship. They turn slowly. Auto makers realize that the market has changed and customer demand is now for fuel efficient vehicles. Hybrids are like ethanol and are now generally seen to be a bummer. It is sad that presidential candidates Clinton and McCain have proposed a gasoline tax holiday for this summer that would do little, in reality, for consumers. Obama is correct in his remarks about the Clinton and McCain proposals: It's more of the same from Washington trying to put a band aid on a serious problem but not really fixing the problem. Instead of the tax holiday, the government should put an end to the practice of requiring refinerys to produce a variety of blends to meet standards at various locations in the United States. The Congress should make it possible for drilling in the USA and offshore.

Due to the high cost of gasoline, you'd have to guess that thefts of pickups and SUVs in Florida and other southern states by thieves who ship them to Cuba and other places south of the border has dropped off.

People should quit complaining about $3.00 or even $4.00 a gallon gas.
We have a bargain and don't know it. Large trucks, SUVs, an American "living large lifestyle," all drive demand, and demand drives the price of the supply.(It's simple economics with a commodity-based product traded on global world markets, just like orange juice and pork bellies).
CNNFN 5/1/2008: Bogged down -- Most expensive places to buy gas Rank Country Price/gal 1. Sierra Leone $18.42 2. Aruba $12.03 3. Bosnia-Herzegovina $10.86 4. Eritrea $9.58 5. Norway $8.73 6. United Kingdom $8.38 7. Netherlands $8.37 8. Monaco $8.31 9. Iceland $8.28 10. Belgium $8.22
111. United States $3.45 Sorry but you can't argue with statistics.

The chickens have come home to roost! HA HA to those folks driving the gas guzzling monsters for these past years. No one learned from the 70's gas crisis, and now they're crying in their beer.
Now is the time for leadership from Washington and Harrisburg to promote GOOD public transportation, carpooling, and other alternatives. McCain don't got it; Hillary don't got it; Barrack GOT IT!

Wonder what they will do with the gas guzzlers? You know the price won't be dropping for awhile, they will shortly be sitting and rusting in the used car lots. Maj, your right the chickens have come home to roost. Peace

The US Automakers are idiots and have been for sometime.
In the late 60's when the Datsuns & Toyotas started hitting the US market, Ford, GM, etc just let them have the small fuel efficient car market for years until they finally realized the market was there. Then they put our little junky cars that lost out for quality reasons.
Now, they are years behind Toyota with hybrids.
In the 60's, Ford had a hit wth the Mustang. A very popular car. After the mid 70's, they just lessened it every year until it became a piece of junk. Now, they got a little smarter & made the new Mustang look sort of like the old one & Waaalaaa people are buying it Brilliant!!!
Check out the new T-bird!!!!
I don't know the milage but if you are going to guzzle - at least guzzle with some style.

MAJKONG and CAROL are acting as if they have gained a personal victory from the slowing sales of bigger vehicles and rising gasoline prices. It makes me wonder what else makes them feel good about themselves??? perhaps...burning american flags, rising food prices, higher taxes, dental work,or maybe aids and cancer?...hmm
Carol will somehow link aids and cancer with the Bush Administration policies.

I don't think the article mentioned that many car dealers now are refusing to take large SUVs or bigger pickups on trade.
Manheim Auto Auctions notes that in April compared to March, pickup truck sale prices at auction dropped almost 10%- that squeezes the dealer who took in a trade-in against the cost of a new vehicle.
Many dealers now have a glut of big gas-guzzling trucks and SUVs that they may sell only after sitting many months, and they are beginning to realize it.
Trade-in values are now beginning to reflect that.

Unfortunately, what they've done with the Malibu (a stripped Chevelle) assures I'll never buy on of those!

How does burning flags have anything to do with the topic at hand? C'mon man, you can't deny that the chickens are indeed coming home to roost. The Europeans and Japanese have been getting it right as far as economic vehicles go for decades, while over here in America we were perpetuating the "fat, lazy, wasteful" American stereotype. They've been making NICE fuel efficient vehicles for a long time, while people here have scoffed at the idea of fuel efficiency in favor of their Lincoln Continental or Ford Bronco and now their Hummer. It's ridiculous. I'm sorry, I'm not an America hater (although I'm sure you'd namecall and fingerpoint otherwise) but people like you need to realize there are some legitimate reasons why the rest of the world thinks we're a bunch of wasteful morons.

Might want to invest in horse and buggies. Don't count on the government, they are out of touch with the people.

It's ridiculous. I hate to admit it, but you are SO right. I am a Chevy fan, but I just bought my 3rd Camry, and each one is just a bit sweeter than the last. We've got 3 Toyotas in the driveway, and my new 6-cylinder Camry is getting the same city mileage as my previous 4-cylinder Camry did. Both of his trucks are 4-cylinders, and we've gotten well over 200,000 miles on all of them (his trucks and my old Camrys) with no major repairs. What more could you ask for?

I'm sorry, I'm not an America hater (although I'm sure you'd namecall and fingerpoint otherwise) but people like you need to realize there are some legitimate reasons why the rest of the world thinks we're a bunch of wasteful morons. For the record I drive a toyota tacoma currently. it gets 18 mpg,it is a 4 cylinder. i know alot of friends and family who own chevrolet trucks with V-8's that get 16-20 mpg city. there is a bit of a myth about american vehicles getting low mpg averages. i used to own a civic that got 35/42 mpg, now that was impressive. it is not for me to decide what other people should drive. there is always a trade-off for good gas mileage, everyone has different needs and wants in a vehicle. i think it's ridiculous for another person to be so opinionated about what other folks drive, especially when they are paying the bill. on your point about people like me caring what the rest of the world thinks of us...they are all jealous of me,because i am free for the most part to do whatever i want to do. i live in the best country for me. i served 6 years in the navy and i've seen some of the world, and in my opinion, the rest of world would give anything to be born american. as for what the rest of the world thinks of you......who knows. btw... all car manufacturers have their good and bad points, toyota's used to be famous for rusting out. wasn't the yugo a european car? bmw's, mercedes, porsche, land rover, and vw's are all nortoriously lousy for poor lasting quality. i agree that japaneese cars are good...i've owned 4 of them (3 brand new 1 with 29k miles). they are far from perfect though. most american's i know work very hard, are very fit and conservative with their money. it sounds like you need new some friends!
