Unfortunately the City can do nothing directly about the condition of the roads here.

For instance, our Main Street is actually a State Highway, and the State decides when it goes on the list for repairs and when the repairs are done.
In Fact the state did relay the asphalt on Main Street about two years ago.

I will say, that the 548 entrance road into our town is in sad condition, and has never had anything done to it in the 15 years I've been here. Not even a simple clean up.

Our underpass intersection is pitiful. Needs cleaned and painted etc. It is the least attractive entrance to a town I can remember. It is a very low priority for the state. Any clean up will have to be done by our citizens.

There simply is no organization to what our city government does. I would suggest a very simple "To Do List" and take it one small thing at a time.

I have to disagree with you on the city can do nothing with the roads here. I understand they do not mess with the state hwy, but they are solely responsible for the roads all thru the downtown housing areas. I drive a truck and I have a hard time even driving down them. There are several roads behinds Charles’s Grocery that might as well be old wagon trails. I mean they are absolutely the worst I have ever seen in all the small towns I have been thru. Absolute disgrace!

Since the city apparently has no money, from what I understand on these threads, would you be in favor of a tax increase to pay for the work? Or, how would you go about paying for the work? This is the type of information you need to talk to your city leaders about, not just whine and complain how bad something is. Since they drive the same roads, they probably already realize how bad the streets are.

Yep, I'm call BULL PUCKY on that one, Why having they been LIEING for the last Ten Years saying we'll get your street next. The Road Repairs in Royse City have the same problem as that Loud Mouth that said move Back to DAllas..No ambition, Ignorent, and probably like fixing his cars front end every couple years at the Cities costly judgement that people aren't paying attention.

Royse City has made National News on their streets as the Worst City for Travel..DORK

Wake up "Local Dude" these streets did not get like this overnight. They have been getting worse for probably 10 years. It is ludicrous that in 10 years plus, they have not had money to fix the streets. My point here is not to point the blame at our current admin. but at some point they need to dig deep and find the money to do this, end of story.

I happen to agree with To The Top. Yes, if the streets are that bad, they do need to find the money to do it. My point is, where so people think the money is going to come from? If they don't have the tax dollars now, they won't next year, or the year after or ...
And the streets are going to keep getting worse and will cost more and more to fix the longer they wait.
No, I do not live in Royse City, I live in Greenville and, trust me, the street situation here is just as bad if not worse. The city did a study a few years ago which said, due to decades of neglect,$20 million was needed in immediate work just to put a dent in the backlog of streets which were below par, plus another $1 million every year just to maintain the roads which were in good shape. That didn't include any money for new construction, just repairs and maintenance.
Obviously, the city didn't have that kind of money (still doesn't), so the majority of the work was delayed and the streets just keep getting worse. Greenville is all bonded out right now, so that is not an option.
Which again begs the question. Do you feel Royse City should raise taxes to pay for street repairs? If not, how do you think they should pay for the work?

You have a good point on where is the money going to come from. I do not have the answers either. If they did take taxes up just for the streets, I am positive they would blow the money on something besides streets anyway. Chances are they would build another $100,000 concrete slab with water shooting up out of holes (so called water park).

Believe it or not, they talked about doing the same thing here in Greenville, filling in the swimming pool (which has been losing money) and replacing it with one of those splash parks (which would lose less money).

The city manager hired an assistant who replaced John Ward. There is no plural when you talk about his hiring. Get over the water park, it's there , it ain't going nowhere and it's paid for. Move on to what they ain't done yet.

From reading a lot of your posts, you seem fairly educated on the happenings in our city. Are you the Mayor by chance? I have some questions for you if you are

No I'm not the mayor, I can read the newspaper and listen at the coffee shop and then ask the mayor or council people what is right and what is wrong. Most folks on here don't bother. You can reach the mayor on his city email site at mayor@roysecity.com

Unfortunately, sales taxes from the sales of alcohol don't amount to a hill of beans. I actually debated this on the Greenville forum when the vote came up there a year ago. Back then, the closest alcohol beer and wine sales to Greenville were in Neylandville, about five miles outside the city limits. Neylandville, which only had one business (the liquor store), only received about $40,000 in sales tax revenue each year, even though it presumably was where the majority of the people who lived in and around Greenville went to buy their hooch.
I had no problem with the sales of beer and wine in Greenville. My point was that the revenue gained would not be the great economic salvation that the supporters of the measure thought it would be, and that is how it was sold to the public.
There was a story in the paper a while back which shows that Greenville's sales taxes this year are only about $8,000 ahead of where they were last year, even with the sales of beer and wine, and this is in a city which is bigger than Royse City and, presumably, which has more drinkers. That would fill maybe, what, two potholes? Of course, the economy sucks, so that could be part of the equation. Still ...
Now the cities of Wolfe City and Quinlan are wanting to vote in the same measure, in the hopes it will help them economically. I doubt it. It probably will just mean more drunk folks.

Daily Horoscope for December 30

Libra

If you're invited to a party or gathering today and you don't know whether to go, you should. You'll have a terrific time and you might meet someone who always makes your knees go weak. Even if it's a perfectly harmless flirtation and you're both happily committed to other people, it will still do your ego good to have a tantalizing conversation with this person.
