It's amazing how any article about racial minorities brings out all of the bigots like weeds. And some of you people who cheer a hit and run attack on a day laborer are probably some of the same people who get all bent out of shape because someone says "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas."
Regardless of how you feel about immigration policy, these people are human beings, not cockroaches or rodents. Yes, I know not all of them are innocent angels. The ones who are engaged in gang violence and drug dealing should be arrested and deported. But the ones who are here just to work to help their families should be given a chance to legalize their status.
The truth is though that immigration from Latin America is not a permanent phenomenon. Birth rates are declining and there is economic improvement. Plus, the declining values of the U.S. dollar will make America a less attractive destination.

Irene, If you want to see something funny, take a ride about a block up north from where this took place and take a right on Horseblock I beleive it is. Right on the front lawn of UPS is a big sign that reads "Now Hiring". Whats funny is that if you look right across the street you have a large group of these wonderful people that you mention that get up at 5:00 in the morning to go to work. Oh thats right Irene, These wonderful people are here illegally and can not go in to UPS and get a real job. Then you will see your hard earned dollars go right out the window when your property value starts to sink. Nobody in this blog has complained about immigration, it has always been the way people came to this country. But what has happened now with all these illegal immigrants is wrong and as our economy gets worse you will see the repercussions. This is just the start.

And if in fact he is legal and is working as a Day laborer...there is a VERY good chance he is working illegally off the books. Either way he's sucking up our tax dollars.

I live in Nassau County and we have the same problem. So if we are to suceed it should be Long Island and that is as far off as you think. You would have to live in these areas to know the pain that overcomes you when you see your nice neighborhood going down the drain because of useless politicians not enforcing our laws.

The economy isn't going the drain ebcause of illegals. the economy is going down the drain because of economic policies that are soley ocused on the very wealthy, massive tax cuts to millionaires, big corrporate fact cats, oil subsidies and spending hhundreds of billions a year in Iraq. Thats why our econmy is going down the drain.
