Dating as far back as the late 70's when KC started it's great reign over the state of NM in girls basketball, with the most recent run of 3 in a row ending in '05. You would have to include Shiprock winning 3 straight breaking the dominance of KC basketball at that time. One can not forget Navajo Prep's stronghold over the 2A Crown in the 90's. Farmington won the title and produced some strong teams in its run also. Aztec had a taste of what it's like to hold the coveted blue trophy last year over KC. This is opinion!

Are we talking just about the teams in 4 Corners area or the whole state of New Mexico??

IN THE THIS AREA, WOW, GREAT QUESTION - I WILL GIVE IT A SHOT. THE KARLYN YEARS WERE PRETTY IMPRESSIVE, THEN YOU HAVE THE YEAR KC STARTED NATASH CURTIS (I ACTUALLY HAVE A CRUSH ON HER) CHRISTY YAZZIE, KIM SIMPSON, NADIA BEGAY AND ROWDY, WITH A SOLID BENCH AND GREAT COACH IN SCROGGINS - THEY WERE SO FREAKIN' GOOD. FHS WAS RANKED #2 THAT YEAR WITH WINS OVER #2 RANKED LA CUEVA,#5 RANKED CIBOLA, AND THOSE LADY BRONCOS BLASTED THEM 78-24. YEA, PRETTY IMPRESSIVE. THEY ALSO WON THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP - THEY OPENED UP A 40-10 LEAD IN THE FIRST 8 MINS OF THAT GAME AND NEVER LOOKED BACK. THEN THERE WAS THE SMILEY AND NATASHA JOHNSON YEARS IN THE LATE 8O'S, WITH RICHARDSON LEADING THE WAY. SO, IF I HAD TO RANK THEM I WOULD SAY -

1. DEXTER IRVIN & KIM KARLYN YEARS
1. RICHARDSON & NATASHA JOHNSON / SMILEY YEARS

3. SCROGGINGS & NADIA / YAZZIE / CURTIS YEARS

AS FAR AS PREP AND AZTEC, NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THOSE TEAM, HELL I CAN COME UP WITH 5 MORE KC TEAMS AND 3 MORE SHS TEAMS THAT WOULD BEAT THOSE PREP AND AZTEC TEAMS BY 30. IF WE ARE TALKIN STATE WISE, THEN HOBBS WITH ROSS BACK WHEN NADIA PLAYED, ALONG WITH CLOVIS A COUPLE YEARS AGO ALONG WITH MAYFIELD AND THE TWIN SISTERS - WHAT SAY YOU?

I actually think J. Richardson really did a great job in incorporating the up and down style of basketball into girls basketball in the 80's. At the time I remember it being a slow down half court game that was boring to watch. Winning 8 in a row is a phenomenal feat in any sport though. There was a double or triple overtime game at Cibola HS against KC and SHS that KC won. That was a great game.

With NavPrep there was Gwen Hobbs who went on to play for UNLV. Then the teams that the late Rob Adams took to ABQ were good too.

Farmington had a some good teams, with Samantha Roberts leading the Scorps over KC, Holman at the helm. He certainly outcoached Scroggins that year in ABQ.

Nadia and that bunch definitely was an outstanding group of girls. With the likes of Kim Simpson, Melany Begay and a whole cast of players. the following years with Christy Yazzie, Devin Diehl rounding out a cast of the latest champions.

Karen Karlin, Sharon Max, Jamie Tanner and many others have produced quality teams also.

I'd put
1. Dexter Irvin w/ Karlin, Max, J. Tanner
2. Jerry Richardson and "Rock with Wings Crew"
3. Nadia, Kim, with Scroggins
4. Diehl, Christy Yazzie, coach M. Christy
5. Rob Adams w/ Nav. Prep

Those Navajo Prep years with Hobbs and even Crisp were darn good, but at the level of Holmans 2001 State Championship Squad? They were good, but not top ten, maybe #10. Is 4 Corners from Tulsa gonna add something to this conversation or what?

I didn't list Holman's Scorpion's only because they were not impressive. Having lost to KC that year several times does not in my mind qualify them as top 5 material.

Just the same way that the 2006 Gallup Bengals were definitely not better than Mayfield's Spence and McGee sisters, but for the championship game, they definitely executed and we're outstanding for a game.

Where does this year's KC basketball team rank with the previous 17 State Champion teams?

As in my comments or this topic? What is your interest in this chat? From the area or just a fan of the basketball played here?

No comparison, remember in all the teams we talked about, we also mentioned a solid coach, balanced attack, and depth. This years KC team is quick and a couple of good shooter, but no size, or dominate post play - and of course the coaching question mark, at time it seems like KC is just running their own game and not being really coached and that isn't a knock on the coach or team, they just seem in separate places and not one cohesive unit at times. This team couldn't beat the Holman bunch of 2001. I would say that if this team does go on to win the state championship, it would be the worst of the 18 championship teams KC has put out there. That is also like saying "My Benz is in the shop so I am left driving the BMW 5 series to work this morning!"

I am from the area and graduated from SHS 1990, with the twin towers, Natasha Johnson and Virginia Kirk. I've had family members and friends play on both the boys and girls teams in both Shiprock and Kirtland over the years. I've been away for several years at a time while going to college and I love going home to watch the big games in the district. You can find me nowdays at the U of U school of medicine. I do think the girls at Kirtland will take state this year and will be looking forward to reading about that in the coming weeks.

Give me a break-I am home this week from Tulsa and was visiting friends. Yes, I am going to add something to this forum.

Navajo Prep did have a couple of good teams during the 90's when Hobbs was coached Al. Also the Crisp sisters had a good run when they were coached by Rob Adams.

Aztec had a good team last year with Patricia Malouff, Rayla Doty, and Charity being coached by Chelsea Shock.

Farmington had a couple of good teams during the 90s when Bill Dowty was coaching. Of course, there is the team with Samantha Roberts coached by Kevin Holman when they took state over KC. Another team that comes to mind is during Tammy Davis coaching years with Randi Grimes.

Shiprock had a good run when Richardson was coaching the "Twin Towers-Natasha Johnson and Virgina Kirk along with Sheila Smiley and Pee-Wee Begay. Another team that comes to mind is Kelly Clark, Adrianne Goodluck, and Marlena Deschene. During that time these girls were coached by Charles Kromer. Last team that comes to mind is when Shantel Begay, Vijay Begay, Miranda Beyale, and Racheal Harrison were playing for Henry Gettler.

KC had a lot of teams that were good dating back to the late 70's. First team that comes to mind is when Jim Karlin was coaching Cara Priddy. Of course they were the teams from the 80's when Trena Royston, Heidi Hohenberg, and Rhonda White were playing for Lee Fleming. Here comes the 90's loaded with great teams. Dexter Irvin had a good run with Karyn Karlin, Sharon Max, Jaime Tanner, Nicolette Anderson, and Alicia Sherman. After Irvin was Scroggins with Nadia Begay, Kym Simpson, Natasha Curtis, Buffy Charley, and Melanie Begaye. After that team was Mike Christie with Christy Yazzie, Devin Diehl, CJ Hogue, and Kaitlyn Yazzie. Last but least....once again...Charles Kromer with April Christie, Dayon Hall-Jones, Ali Hathaway, Tanesha Nez, and Olivia Harris.

Here is my order of the best teams:

1. Dexter Irvin with Karyn Karlin
2. Richardson with "Twin Towers, and Sheila Smiley
3. Scroggins with Nadia, Kym, Natasha, Melanie, and Tiffany.
4. Kromer with the present KC Lady Broncos
5. Mike Christie with Christy Yazzie, Devin Diehl, CJ Hogue, and Kaitlyn Yazzie

Nice, you add credibility to this chat then - good! I used to coach with Natasha Johnson, lover her to death, good person.

I hope you were saying that Shawntel, Vijai ...coach by getler was at the level of the those Davis or Holman coached teams, and for sure not of the Richardson or Karlin coached teams, decent, but far from those teams - those teams would beat that last shiprock team by 20. And the Mike Christie coached team (devin, kristy, harrison)would beat this years team by at least 10, they were solid and they had better size!!! Wake up! Although you get good props for the info on the other teams!!! Randi Grimes was ok for FHS, but the glue to that team transferred to Snyder, Tx, otherwise they may have won state there senior year

Yes, I do think that team was at the level compared to other teams. For sure they were not at the level of when Karlin was playing and Richardson years. What size did Mike Christie have compared to this year's team? Who is Harrison?? One last thing...you should know more about the last Shiprock team than I do.

The reason why I say you should know more about the last Shiprock team.....you coached that team to a district championship, state appearance, beat KC the first time and lost to KC by 2 ponts the second time, most important...you won coach of the year with them. Need I say more!!!!

I agree that M. Christie's team would beat this year's team by 10 or 15. They were smarter and more disciplined as a team. Their defense was solid and without a doubt was a very good coaching job done by him and his staff. They had size with T. Curtis (a current KC coach), but she outplayed R. Grimes in the finals. Grimes was an outstanding player as well.(Side note: KC went up to a quick and fast lead against Davis in the finals, and only scored like 4 points the second half against a run by Farmington that year. Farmington ran out of time.)

I think we're overlooking the coaches when we're talking about great teams-You will always have good players, it's what you do with those players.

Props to the current Broncos, Christie, Hall-Jones, Nez, Benally & Hathaway. I hope Kromer has the answers.

i'm going to go by coaches....

1. Dexter Irvin's teams
2. Jerry Richardson's teams
3. Mike Christie's teams
4. Rob Adam's team

not very analytical, but i do think a good coach makes a great team complete.

We were talking about Christie's second state championship team with Christy Yazzie, Devin Diehl, CJ Hogue, and Kaitlyn Yazzie. I know for a fact Christie's first state team with Tasha Curtis is way better team than the current Lady Broncos.
