What's the deal with Charter being the only cable company serving Lakeville?

It seems the rest of the metro has a choice - but Lakeville residents are stuck with one choice for high-speed internet - Charter.

In Savage, I had Mediacom and it cost me $89/mo for unlimited Phone, 10mbps internet, and a family package digital tier with an included high-def DVR and STARZ/ENCORE.

In Lakeville, I pay the $89/mo and I get no phone, only 3 mpbps internet, and the family package digital tier with no STARZ/ENCORE.

I'd move to Dish but I need high speed internet - and Frontier makes you get phone service for DSL and Charter charges $60/mo for 3mbps.

I think the city of Lakeville needs to seriously review their franchise agreement and start introducing serious competition.

I totally agree with KarlB. Whenever there is only one provider in an area, the service is almost guaranteed to be more expensive and offer fewer choices. Is there any reason why Charter Communications is the only provider for Lakeville??

I completely agree. In Bloomington I was an extremely happy Comcast customer for 7 years. Charter customer service and internet service is absolutely horrible as is their pricing. I have to watch my bills monthly because they are always tacking on new charges. For the first 8 months I lived in Lakeville, I had to call for an hour each month to complain to Charter about how they are adding BS charges to my monthly bill WHEN I'M ON A GUARANTEED PROMOTION FOR A YEAR! If someone would start a class action lawsuit against Charter, I'd be the first one to sign up because I've been wronged by Charter every which way from Sunday and it boggles my mind that any company can operate the way Charter does. But because they are the only cable provider in Lakeville, we're forced to put up with it. That is so wrong. To top it off, I was forced to get Charter Business Service because I run servers and that service is even worse and much more expensive than Charter Residential. Your screwed in every direction with Charter. The topper is Charter Business and Charter Residential are two different companies yet they share the same 1-800 number for customer service. And the two are completely oblivious to each other. For example, Charter Residential keeps trying to dick me around on my package because they don't think I have internet service through them. I have to keep telling them I have Charter Business because that doesn't show up on their screens. Also once every two months, Charter Residential calls and trys to offer me their internet service because they don't think I have internet through Charter. Bottom line is Charter doesn't know their asses from a hole in the ground.

I heard terrible things from my sister that lives in lakeville. I moved there and signed up. Talked them into a great deal. Then when I got the good the bill, that good deal wasn't on it. PISSED ME OFF. Very unhappy with them.

Charter is the worst experience I've ever dealt with as a consumer.
The reason I put up with it for as long as we did is for high speed internet.
After they have not fixed our problem in a yr and they left us sitting at our all day without showing or calling (which was about the 15th time we've had them out) I could not take it any more.
I've finally decided to go with AT&T internet which is 4 megs slower and get satellite. I will NEVER EVER deal with Charter again.

I have unfortunately been stuck with Charter for years now and every time my internet goes down, they say it is my modem and not their service even after a Charter technician came out and told me it was them not my modem.

I agree with everyone about Charter and the fact that there isn't any competition here in Lakeville for cable service they can charge what ever they want. My charter monthly bill is 150 so I can have internet service and movies as well as regular TV. When the service goes out I have to spend over an hour on the phone with a none English speaking person to get things fixed and you can tell they are reading the instructions from a book. Really wish that the city of Lakeville would find another cable company that would give charter some competition because I would leave Charter in a heartbeat.

I agree with everybody on this board. Im going to find a way to start a petition, contact the people on this board and go to the City of Lakeville. Enough of the terrible non-speaking English customer service and the 160.00+ per month fees.

I am also a charter customer and I have received nothing but terrible service for the past 2 years. It is a bunch of B.S. and it is time for a rival to enter the Lakeville market.
I have found out that if you want to get anything accomplished with bills or customer service that the only way to get a good answer is to go to the Charter office on Cedar ave. and just start raising hell!!

i'm a former telco tech and did a 6 month stint as charter service rep. i'm also a charter customer now. i have seen the problems from both ends hahaha. lack of investment in plant and people. typical corporate story...just improve next quarters earnings. when their service works it's great, but god help you if you have ANY problem. the cable industry needs federal regulatory oversight like telco...not the local sherriff

I agree I recently moved to Woodstock CT and could not believe the price of cable, internet, and phone. I was a happy comcast customer for years but now pay significatly more for all three, I called to lower my programing because I was falling behind on my monthly payments and the best they can do is $110 a month. (That is currently one weeks pay) There is no other coice for TV as there are too many trees for a dish. Unhappily stuck with Charter forever....

I moved to Lakeville last summer. I am a computer technician and rely on internet heavily. If I would have known Charter was like this and was the only choice I had I wouldn't have moved to where I am, and that is the truth. In this housing market I had tons of choices where to live. I don't know what kind of back-door deals were made with the City of Lakeville and Charter, but we need competition! Especially in the ISP arena.

Some small advice I can give as far as Internet service going down all the time ... I was so frustrated with the internet outages occurring so frequently that I spent an hour finding out the real problem because their tech support is clueless. Most of the time it is their DNS servers. If you don't know how to configure your router, get somebody to help you. I changed mine to use Google's DNS servers and it has helped tremendously. Google DNS servers are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 - you can read about it here. http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/

First, KariB, learn something before you whine like a spoiled valley girl. Yes there is a reason that charter is the only cable company in lakeville. They invested the time and money into a small market first....... Little ol' KariB is not enough of a customer base for the other cable companies to waste third time and money trying to compete for a few customers.

....... Building a cable network is EXPENSIVE! It takes millions of dollars per small town and millions per suburban neighborhood. Instead of whining that charter is the only one, maybe you should drop a few million and try to compete with them..........

What you will, find is that A) thre are not enough customer dollars to support 2 cable companies and B) that Charter is already a superior compared with the other choices out there. In lakeville, they have faster Internet, less outages, quicker customer service and cheaper rests for the programming offered compared to the Monopoly north of the river (Comcast). Oh and since you didn't research before you whined, try going to a Comcast area and see what other choices you have. There is NEVER 2 cable companies ion an area in Minnesota. Cable infrastructure is too expensive o share and only once company owns the wire coming into your house. To have competition, it would require another cable company to run a COMPLETE network right next to the charter one all thenwaymto your house! Those wires are not public infrastructure, they are privately owned.
Oh and for Internet, there are several high speed providers in lakeville.

Spoken like a true Charter dink! My family suffered poor internet, poor hdtv and it got much worse every time it rained. After almost six months of complaining and more "tech" visits than I care to count I was still told the problem was in the wiring of the house. Later I found out it was ants and water in the equipment on the telephone line. Meanwhile my sister had signed up (before she knew my struggles). The "techs" never buried the bright orange cable in her yard! It took months and months of fighting with charter who had the balls to tell her the cable was buried!! She said do you want pictures?? It stretched her whole yard. Then my family moves it's family business to Apple Valley from Burnsville... We gave charter 5 months warning and countless phone calls making sure the phone numbers would be switched on the agreed upon date. They never switched the phone lines and have costed the family business thousands of dollars. Still today we are losing money because of charters monopoly and incompetence. I urge anyone reading this to get satellite or do anything possible to avoid charter!

Not only that, plenty of high speed providers in Lakeville lmfao... DSL is not high speed.. 12 MBPS a second lol is dial up on crack... With charter I get 30 and when I test it it's always 40+ but IMO charter still blows.. Most of the techs are contractors... Pathetic... Get your pen employees and train them well cause they fuck up everytime contractor or employee!
