If you are here legally Welcome.

If not, get out and stay out until you can do it legally. No special favors and it doesn't matter what age you were when you got here. NO OTHER COUNTRY in the world allows that to happen and they don't include anchor babies.

Again if you are here legally Welcome, If you are not get the heck out and stay out.

Pardon me while I wipe away a tear. The front page of the paper speaks volumes about the state of our country's economy and the deficits we are facing. If you are here LEGALLY end of story; if not, I'm sorry but I personally have no sympathy. The bank robber who robs because he lost his job and needs to feed his family is he still not guilty or should we just say there were extenuating circumstances and look the way. There is not another country in the world that would take on this illegal burden that we have been dealing with for ever. Enough already!!

There's a great deal of hypocrisy on this issue. Remember the blowups on the Arizona thing? This "column" reminds me of that...

Mr. Varley,

I have a several questions for you: In your church, town or the surrounding area, are there are no "poor and impoverished" American Citizen children that you could not have mentored and paid college for? While "Tomas" has many redeeming qualities, should he be put before American Citizens who need the help as much as or even more? That is the problem with illegal immigration and what it is doing to this country. While you very nicely helped this young man, a group of American Citizen children/teenagers who needed the help were left at the curb, ignored and generally given the message that an illegal immigrant (who has no business being in this country regardless of how they came to be here) is more important than you. How is that moral, fair or right?

I cannot agree with your choice. In my opinion, your decision is not moral, fair or right for America or its citizens. And I suggest that your choice has done nothing for this country other than to undermine it further.

I am very sorry that a young man of this caliber is illegal. I hope he takes what he learned here and uses it to better the fate of people in his home country. This isn't personal, there are plenty of heart wrenching stories we could fill the paper with about citizens of this country. Let's start there. Take care of our own. If our own house is in disarray how can we help others. Mr. Varley you are a wonderfully compassionate man and your service is still needed in your community. Thank you.

Indeed this article has contributed oh so positively to a better understanding of both head and heart to the Dream Act. There are so many like Tomas in our country who truely love our country. Thank you Joe Varley ... thank you once again Ruben Rosario.

Here's the "heart" of the story. Neither the people nor the offspring of the people who basically said "to hell with American laws, we are crossing" will be given any kind of amnesty. If American wants to survive she will punish law breakers not reward them for lying, cheating and stealing. If a Mexican (or any other group) crosses illegally into this country and goes to work, attends school, or gets on welfare rolls he/she has to lie, cheat or steal to get it done. Deport them when we find them and cut off their job supplies so that they have no work. They will go back home or starve to death. The END.

keep in mind this is not your typical immigration story and although it purports to be a rosy tale it doesn't square with most cases which basically end up being a looming diaster for america. what mr varley did was illegal period. the best we can take from this story is that tomas now represents a reasonable candidate for american citizenship so go back, apply, and get in line and perhaps someday
we well be able to honestly say "welcome to the USA"

So Tomas is an illegal alien. What documents did he use to get a Social Security number and drivers license? If he is working, he had to complete an I9 document.

Hey Rosario or Tomas, were any laws broken relating to any three of these?

Sorry Rueben, you are falling on deaf ears. If you are here legally I will put out the welcome mat and welcome you with open arms. If you are here illegally you need to leave this country and come back the correct way.

If others do it why can't the illegals. There are plenty of legal citizens that could have used the same help.

So if this kid is so upfront and honest and his boss is soo great of a guy, then why didn't he go through the citizenship process and become an American citizen rather than remaining illegal?

I agree with most of the comments on this topic. From his education to his employer, he is an illegal and doesn`t deserve anything. He should have been reported long ago, and sent back to his folks. These illegals are willing to leave their children in the hands of stangers and left to survive on their own? This alone is a crime in America, so his parents, if they EVER show up, should be shot on site. American taxpayers have had enough of this. His employer should be charged with aid to an illegal and charged for that crime. He knew the kid was not here legally.

It may sound harsh to some, but this is the kind of thing illegals are will to do, and shift the childs burdon onto the American taxpayer. NO, it has to stop. Send that kid back, and charge ALL THOSE who had a hand in helping this illegal from the time his folks drooped him off, and charge his folks with the crime of abandoning their children.

I support Arizona and it`s attenpt to correct what the U.S. government will not. It`s high time Minnesota woke up and started the same thing!

Thank you for the touching story. The injustices that you have not mentioned.
1)My brother in law who spent 5 years going through the immigration process to become a citizen.
2) The tax payers (which is you and me) who paid $9500/year in taxes to educate this person.
3) The fact that this person knows that they are breaking the law by being here.
4) The fact that this immigrant is not paying taxes
5) The fact that his employer is not paying taxes
6) The fact that mexicans have large families which stress our public welfare system.
This is an example of how the rights of the individual are put above the common good. I agree that the federal government has been inept in dealing with this issue, and feel for this young man's situation, but the fact that this is not just 1 person this is compounded when 15 million people all have their own sob stories about why they must be allowed to stay. Two wrongs do not make a right.

Rueben will NEVER do it, because his bleeding heart will NEVER let that truth come out in his words.

Just like those "tear jurking" Christmas wish stories the PP will be putting out. Most of them are those living already off the public dole in the first place, not married with sometimes more than one kid and or live in boyfriend from Chicago or someplace simular. WE are already paying housing, health care, education, food, and all the other social services that go with it.... OR they are cons that are [wiping my eyes of tears now] repenting because they found god while they were locked up like they deserved to be.

Sorry Ruebin, but your kind in Minnesota have to get the message...
WE DON`T WANT THAT ANYMORE! WE CAN`T AFFORD IT!

I hope the government agencys including the INS read this, and go after everyone [and charge them for their criminal offenses they have committed] involved with aiding this kid, including the Catholic church, his empolyer/teacher, and the whole bunch that supported keeping the kid hidden....AND the guy who wrote this story for refusing to give the name of an ilegal.

Support Arizona!

Ruben, the family is here illegally and no matter how good Tomas is he is also illegal. That is one of the major problems in this country today. Washington is sending Billions of dollars overseas ever year to foreign countries,it is time for Washington to stop sending our money overseas. If they want to reduce the budget they can start by keeping that money here. The latest headlines from Washington, oh to reduce the hole we are in , we are going to raise the age of retirement to 68 or 70, we will cut back on medicare for the elderly, I did not see or hear anyone stand up and say, first thing we will do is stop sending Billions overseas, We will put our own house in order before we consider someone elses house. Send the illegals home and Rueben if you don 't like it , go with them
