Re: Your "Sympathy" for Residents Suffering from Falmouth Wind Turbines
November 7, 2011
Dear Falmouth Officials,
As you know, about 50 families have complained to the Town that they are suffering severe symptoms from two wind turbines there. A third one is scheduled to begin operation as soon as a necessary part is installed. Symptoms include headaches, ringing or pressure in the ears, sleep deprivation, anxiety, depression, elevated blood pressure and suicidal tendencies.
I recently asked some of your residents -- some of the victims of your poorly considered project -- if anyone on the Board of Selectmen, the Board of Health or the Acting Town Manager had ever acknowledged the fact that the wind turbines are actually harming residents. Have town officials publicly acknowledged this fact; or do they continue to avoid, or deny, that the Town of Falmouth is hurting its own residents?
The answer I received was that town officials have repeatedly expressed their "sympathy" for the victims -- but that none of you have ever publicly admitted that the town is hurting people.
How can you have "sympathy" for the victims unless you actually believe that the harm is real -- that the victims are telling you the truth about their suffering?
--And, if you believe that they are actually suffering, why do you continue to impose such grave harm upon them -- from your own project, the one that you developed and designed, for which you are the owner, the operator and the sole financial beneficiary?
This is, frankly, a grossly irresponsible, and indefensible, posture for town officials to adopt -- an attempt to appear to be responsive to legitimate concerns for human health and safety, even as you do nothing meaningful to end the suffering.
Sympathy is a cop out. Sympathy is a sell out. Sympathy is a form of denial. Sympathy -- like your obsession with measuring sound levels and gathering more information -- is a transparent excuse to do nothing, even as you continue to impose profound harm on innocent homeowners on a daily basis.
Your expressions of "sympathy" are simply a way for you to feel better about yourselves, since you lack the fundamental human decency to stop harming your own friends and neighbors.
You can't have it both ways.
If you believe that you are harming your residents, then it is your responsibility to stop hurting them.
You own the projects. You designed them. You developed them. You waived the normal permitting and discovery process and you installed them. You are the sole financial beneficiary.
And now, each day that you operate them, you are making people miserable, compromising the health of your residents, and tearing your community apart.
Residents don't want your empty "sympathy." It's insulting. It's maddening. It's depressing.
They want you to grow a conscience and a back bone. They want you to admit honest error. They want you to accept responsibility that properly belongs to you -- because you are the agent of this disaster and you have it within your power to stop depriving residents of their fundamental right to be safe in their own homes.
They want you to do your duty to your citizens -- including the "minority" of citizens who now constitute the "collateral damage" of your profit making venture.
Save your "sympathy." Go search for your moral compass and retrieve it from wherever you misplaced it.
Your expressions of "sympathy" reveal the fact that, deep down, you do know right from wrong. God willing, you will find the courage to act on that knowledge
