Here's an idea to help clean up silver springs. Some of the people who actually pay for garbage pick-up service (you know, the kind of service that most civilized areas have as a mandatory 'you live here, you send your garbage to the dump thing') have the option of putting out their 96gal container and up to six more bags of garbage. For the folks who keep insisting they cannot afford garbage service or just outright are letting it fester in the bags piling up in their yards, How about several folks chipping in for service. There is no rule against this, if the full can and six bags were sent out weekly and say, the folks also took an occasional walk down their street and picked up trash on the roadsides and also pulled a few weeds to put in the trash, this could make a big difference quickly. This might also be cheaper than dump fees. Otherwise slob rule will prevail and businesses will have no interest in locating here. Property values will continue to divebomb. I have a hard time understanding why the local real estate professionals are failing to stand up and lead the charge when it comes to encouraging property cleanup. Another option is voter's electing commissioners who will take action to encourage county nuisance code compliance on the part of the citizens, they could even vote to make garbage pickup service MANDATORY.

Yes there was and it was informative. We will be having a meeting separately as the image committee to discuss the possible directions to take. We need volunteers and we need a solid plan of action or more than one plan to implement. There are various sources of help out there we need to persue and we need the cooperation of the county powers that be. If you would like to be part of this action, please let us know by contacting the image committee at [email protected] We would welcome you and your help.
Thank you

Complaints to the county do work. The clean up of 1235 Idaho is evident to all that go past that address. Although not totally clean, the majority of the junk is gone.
Keep it up - make those complaints to the county.
The result of this particular clean up is now the property is for sale by the bank. Now the county will have generated revenue by getting it cleaned up when new owners occupy the house.
Keep those complaints going into Lyon county to the attention of Maureen Willis. It worked this time and can for others.
Let's all have pride in our community.

Message is to Dudedad. Check out the #7 post. You will see that I mentioned that the meetings are the last Tuesday of the month at 2 pm at the Lahontan Room at Hillyard Hall.(the Sr Cntr Bldg). So will you be at the up and coming meeting. You post as though you mean to be concerned about the cleanup, but I have not seen you there. You can be a member of the committee and be of some help. Ideas and action are always welcome. In fact anyone from Lyon county that wants to be part of the image committee can come and participate. We do have separate meetings outside of the business development committee meetings so as to get the program started with all contributing whatever they can. If you can not make it to a meeting you can email at [email protected]
and make your ideas and help known. Thank you all. We can have pride in our community.

If you have ideas to contribute to the clean up effort or would like to be a volunteer, please come by.
Thank you. We intend to change the image of SS for the better of all of us. We have pride and we're doing something about it. How about you. If you can not make it, but would like to contribute, contact [email protected]

To answer your question, pride in Silver Springs is almost dead. Have you seen any improvement? I have some, not much. BUT THERE IS A NEW ALL VOLUNTEER group of people of SS that will be working to that end. A web site is being set up, volunteers are needed and posters will be going up in various locations soon.
In the meantime, you can help by keeping your property clean. Did you know, if you are a Waste
Management customer in SS, you can have up to 7 extra bags of garbage picked up besides your can every week. Does your neighbor have WM? If not, you can help by allowing them to contribute to the extra bag pickup.
Be good people, help your neighbor and all of us will benefit. Paying forward feels good.

Okay all. Now we are going to have drones at the Silver Springs airport and what will they see (the people at the other end of the camera) when it flies over our town. The drones will show the world how junky this town has become. We can do better, we can help our neighbor, we can apply pressure on the county commissioners and the county manager to do their jobs and get code enforcement budgeted into the 2014/2015 budget, we can pressure the District Attorney to press charges against the offenders that have gross complaints against their property, we can keep our own property clean and neat and we can take pride again in Silver Springs.
What say you?

I'm new to SS also although I'm in Afghanistan I have worked my tail off Improving my place and making sure there is not garbage lying around. And you're right my waste management company is very generous about hauling away just about anything i put in or next to my cans so getting rid of the garbage shouldn't be a problem. But my neighbor is another story so the view from my window is his scummy garbage pile,Some people just have no class. And I'm not sure I like the idea of drones at our airport.LOL

I look forward to meeting you too! Am looking forward to having a neighbor who has been to Afghanistan and can speak to and lend some example to what it takes to avoid ending up on the invasion end of folks who disapprove of what is going on in your neck of the woods, so to speak. In our case, the desert plains. Last time I was in Afghanistan was 1971 and there were young Afghans then who knew exactly what was coming, invasions, etc. Much has come to pass. Do you suppose that the social/economic.....events/exp eriment (AKA legalized pot) going on in Colorado and Washington will result in a similar outcome? After all, until the Taliban wiped it out, the Indica industry was a way of life in Afghanistan.

Now what is up in Silver Springs? Wed, the 19th there is a meeting at the Lahontan room at the community center (Sr. Center) on Fort Churchill st at noon. Fred Steinmann of UNR will be speaking on re-development of this area. Do you know what this means? Check out NRS 279.416. You see, when properties are not kept up so that they are not a fire hazard, not a health hazard, not a economic liability, The redevelopment agency can come into the blighted area and acquire your land and use eminent domain to elimate blight. You could lose your home; you can be relocated and do nothing about it. And this is all because your commissioners and the county manager cut out code enforcement out of the budget and some people took advantage of this and let their property become derelict, unlivable, and a liability to the neighborhood. Now you see what can happen just because we let this situation fester. Go to the county web site and print the form to complain about a property that is not to code. The county will write a letter to the owner of the property and hope that they comply; they are not budgeted to do much of anything else. Very ineffective! Commissioners need to address this issue for the next years budget. Talks will commence in April - go to their meetings and insist that the budget allow for code enforcement officer to control this blighted area. GO TO THE MEETING THIS COMING WEDNESDAY AND FIND OUT MORE - WE ALL NEED TO BE AWARE OF WHAT THE NEXT ROUND OF ACTIONS WILL BE TO BENEFIT A FEW THAT WANT TO CHANGE THINGS FOR THEIR BENEFIT.
All this can be prevented if we clean up our property!!! DO YOUR PART.

These are old posts. Doubt anyone will see this. Just in case...how have all your meetings been working out? Residents need to pick up their own trash. Codes need to be enforced. People need to take responsibility for their own junk. The only thing that may wake up code enforcement is when no development takes place. Who wants to spends millions in the middle of a garbage dump?
