Last year we moved to Silver Springs and within the year we have been here, we have seen two dollar stores go up across from each other & a store/gas station close. VERY disappointing. I understand its a low income area, however we live in a nice neighborhood and I'm ashamed of the surroundings.

Do people not have any pride anymore?

I'm very disgusted that the neighborhoods look like trash, literally! Is there no such city ordinance for people not to pick up their trash & dispose of it properly?

Driving around the neighbor hoods, I see literally TRASH thrown all over yards, piled in corners, blowing into the streets and into other properities. I'm sorry pick up your TRASH, we don't want to clean up after you! Abandoned and even people living trailers & homes who left or currently have all their garbage for other to clean up after is an eye sore. For example on Idaho there are two trailor homes with garbage that keeps blowing all over. It is really a shame and disgusting!

lets try and clean up the community and get ride of the garbage!!

Lol. I agree, but where were you when we had community clean up? Oh... That's right. It all needs to be cleaned up-by someone else other than you. I was going to try and explain the demographics of the area to you, but you know what? I have a feeling it would fall upon deaf ears. Where I live there is tremendous pride. Maybe it's just you. Maybe you should move your embarrassed *ss back to where you crawled out from.

Nice neighborhood? Mine is too... And I don't have to insult my neighbors to make it that way.

No need to be rude, I can understand his point and I'm certain that you can find tolerance enough to read between the lines of his post and see that he's frustrated. I am too, I also am new to the area and despite the fact I have a school age child and a six day a week job, I too keep my property in order and yes, I believe others could do a much better job to say the least. Moreover, where is county/city enforcement at on all this? There is a post on this thread for Lyon county complaint forms and I intend to use it myself- SS is in desperate need of revitalization and has a lot to offer. Lets work together on this.

Hang in there 'concerned resident' maybe we can turn this frustration into action? Like ' dudedad' says, we gotta show up at any and all possible venues to work through this i.e. commerce meetings, fundraisers and yes, neighborhood cleanups.

The Silver Springs Business Development Committee meets the last Tuesday of every month at 2 p.m. at the Lahontan room at the Senior Center building. At the meeting the image committee results are discussed and would welcome anyone's ideas and participation. The public is welcome as it is a community action group of residents trying to make this work. The results can be a cleaner town, a healthier town, and a place where business would consider locating. Participation by more of our residents would help in this project for the benefit of all of us. Please make it a point to attend the next meeting on April 30th.

i have lived in this area now for 17 years... i have raised my children here... bought and sold here... this is the place i consider my home.

i have contributed to this community in many ways throughout those 17 years... also been listening to MANY people say what you and "concerned resident" have said...

the best way to make things better is to involve yourself... DO SOMETHING- anything- besides complain on a thread that three of us have read... SS Image Committee has the right idea... show up... make your voice heard...

i'll be there. what about you??

FYI - all the posts above are from Silver Springs residents. How Topix designated all from somewhere else is a mistery.

And Thank You, Dudedad for the contributions you have made already. Spread the word as it seems that one of the most pressing problems we have here is the lack of a means to communicate. I see Topix as our on-line newspaper for SS.

No need to thank me. This is my home.

Use the big white board. Post your meeting times there for a couple weeks. Bulletin boards in most every business in town too... Including laundromat, dollar store(s), gas station and pizza parlor. Post there and you cover a large percentage of the population. There are ways. Good luck. And YOU keep up the fight too! I for one thank you and the committee for what you are trying to accomplish for Silver Springs.

We have used the "Reader Board" and posters in all the places you mention and others when Waste Mgmt had their free dumpster days last year. I know it works because of the turn out. Will do again.
I would like to see the Reader board have the Chamber's web site address on it and also refer to Topix/SS forum for information and participation.
The most pressing problem is finding the owners of the properties that are in code violation so they can take care of the property themselves. After the county responds to the complaint, getting a clean up done when owners cannot be found is a long drawn out process which involves the D.A. and the Commissioners to take action. If they would consider faster action, this town would be cleaned up, the property values would go up and the tax revenues would go up. Part of the deficeit problem solved! Business would come in, more local people would be able to have a job locally, and this could become a town which would have "pride".

Besides property values going up and then county revenues, the health and mental well being of the residents would improve too! Studies show that the brain prefers order and the body responds by relaxing, as in lower blood pressure, less depression, anger, and anxiety when the surrounding environment is pleasant to look at. Think about it. Then the county could save even more money on all the sheriff calls to settle domestic violence disputes, on delivering services to disabled people many of whom have lost their motivation to live well (no less work) often because of high blood pressure, heart disease, mental illnesses like depression and of course the old stand-by: low self esteem. What if doctors had to make house calls and could order their patients to clean up, clear out the trash, and put their properties in order before they'd prescribe medication? As for more free dumpster days, those dumpsters cost Waste Management $20,000.00 per event. I suggest everyone start somewhere and put some trash out. Timothy Leary reminded us back in the day, "Man cannot survive in his own waste." Could this be why Silver Springs is a town dying because an obstinate few turn their properties into mini garbage dumps and the Commissioners make excuses? Who wants to be happy or healthy?

Talking of pride. Some of the other projects this image committee is working on are the cleanup of all the unusable tires in SS. We are looking for more ideas of what to do with them, other than trucking them up to Idaho for recycling. Any suggestion or help is welcomed.
Another pride project is the painting of the water tank on 95A. If you look at the Chamber's website under Business Development button, you will see one rendition of what it could look like. One of the members on the water co. board is spearheading this project. The other tank is located up the hill from the high school. We would like to see that one painted with the school logo.
Another project which would be awesome is the painting of a mural on the backside of the Nugget with the attractions of this area. We have a local artist that would outline the mural and need volunteers to do the painting. Anybody that has influence with the owners of the Nugget could help by trying to convince them in the doing of this. All of this in addition to the clean up of SS by helping others and the complaints to the county.
So, if you are interested in helping take SS to a new level of 'pride' join the few of us at our next business delvelopment meeting on April 30th at the Lahontan room at Hillyard Hall (Sr. Cntr bldg.) at 2 pm

Speaking of the place on Idaho. Now is your chance to do something about this property. The former owner died last year and now the Nevada State Bank owns this property at 1235 Idaho Ave in Silver Springs as of 3/28/2013. The APN is 018-404-66. The state requires that bank owned properties have to be up to code. I will be submitting a complaint form with pictures to the county. All of you who want to do something can also do the complaint form. You can find it at the Lyon county web site or you can download it from the Chamber of Commerce's web site ( silverspringsnevada.org ) and either mail it or e-mail it to Maureen Willis. A letter will be sent to the bank and the property will be cleaned up or they will face monetary penalties.
If you need more information, you can contact the Image committee on [email protected] You can also come to the business development meeting next Tuesday (April 30th)- I will have partially filled out forms for anyone who wants to use them.
Please be part of the Silver Springs Pride Project. We will all benefit with your participation. Let your neighbors and friends know and we can get this done. Thank you.

Listen up everyone! One or more complaint forms were sent to the county code enforcement agent for the property on 1235 Idaho. The bank got its letter from the county and CALLED THEM to get an extension to clean up the property by May 31. We will be the eyes for this and report on its progress.
So it does work. Please keep the complaints going to clean up the worst of the worst in our community.
We are working on other avenues. Discussions will be ongoing - see you at the business development committee meeting Tues (tomorrow) at 2 pm. at the Lahontan room at Hillyard Hall (the sr cntr bldg)

Well, this meeting today was quite interesting. The Chamber of Commerce advised of things going on and things not happening. The library issue seems to be settled. They will not be closing the library in SS. The resource info should be published soon. The entertainment event at Fort Churchill will not be happening this year; the Parks Dept dragged their feet so event will be planned for 2014. The cleanup of SS was discussed with the possibility of a grant and the cooperation of the town's people.
The image committee commented on the issues of the mural for the Nugget, the SS rocks on the mountain, the painting of the water tank on 95A and mostly on the issue of the waste tires in SS. Volunteers are needed, ideas would be welcomed, the organization of all aspects of the project need to be worked out. The cleanup of SS is a major objective and needs a lot of help in organizing and coordination to get it done.
A lot of work will be done by the time of the next meeting on TUESDAY MAY 21 AT 12 NOON AT THE SENIOR CENTER, not at the Lahontan room of Hillyard Hall.
I hope you will attend and help your community, if with nothing else but suggestions. It would be nice to have a volunteer army to begin the process of the cleanup and the tire roundup. More news to follow.

Complaints to the county do work. The clean up of 1235 Idaho is evident to all that go past that address. Although not totally clean, the majority of the junk is gone.
Keep it up - make those complaints to the county.
