Fernley floats alternatives
While the Truckee-Carson Irrigation District continues to consider lining the Truckee Canal with concrete, the city of Fernley is proposing alternative solutions that would protect the city from a repeat of the January 2008 flood while also protecting the city's groundwater supply.

My idea, which I proposed to TCID in 2008, was to line only one side of the canal with cement. The side that is closest to the houses of Fernley. The other side of the canal is uphill most of the way through Fernley, so if the canal broke on the opposite side of Fernley, it would not hurt any houses or people. If the canal is lined only on one side, the bottom would not be covered, thus allowing the protection of the aquafir, or city's groundwater.
