I can find a reason? Hmm...lack of money for small city defenses against weather...lets go with that.

Bet many of them didn' have flood insurance

Oh, if you dig a little deeper you'll find he had a hand in this somewhere--or his good "friend" Vicente Fox!!!

Many homeowners in my area are required to carry flood insurance. Does anyone know the percentage of residents who are uncovered?

That really sucks, I do feel sorry for those people who lost their homes and vehicles. I used to have flood insurance, then I was told I was no longer in a flood zone, now they recommend I have flood insurance again. Not gonna happen. As it is we pay for years and years on homeowner's insurance and when you need it they depreciate what you had by 3 to 5 times less the value. In other words, if you paid $1,000 for your TV and had it for 2 years, the best you'll get back for it is probably $400 (I have a feeling some of you are going to tell me I'm wrong, but I know people who got that kind of service from their insurance when they needed it.) Insurance is good in some instances, but for the most part they're just a bunch of con artists and the government is the "head boss."

Who's responsible for the above ground canal, or better yet, for building in a flood plain?

No need to worry folks. FEMA should be there to help out in about 3 weeks.

I'm sorry, as one who lost so much after katrina, I hope you will receive more help in rebuilding your lives and homes and no one blames you for living where you do.

Dear Willi - I live in the neighboring town of Sparks, NV. Most people in Fernley are doing well. Here are links for you to view. The children are probably very disappointed. School is supposed to open again tomorrow!

These are from local television stations. They are looking into the possiblity of marmots, a woodchuck like animal, burrowing into the irrigation ditch and weakening it. It is the first irrigation ditch in the west to provide water in the desert to grow food, I believe. I have heard of no injuries so your friends should be safe but maybe a little damp!
Take care!

Dear Dep,- many thanks for your links and lines.
Yes...my friends are safe and okay. I'm in contact with them by phone and e-mail. I live in South Bavaria, close to Austria and Switzerland.
I intend to come to Nevada in May or June. I know Sparks only of pictures.
But you know...all is possible!! Take care also...

lol I think Bush is stoned enough for Iraq mess and if he chooses not to reverse it or at least stand down and hide somewhere in australia....

levee problems, 800 homes flooded... compare that with iraq and abortion and police corruption, u are almost kidding... seems to me so.

The local Fernley city government, i.e. zoning and planning, and federal government which built the failing canal system are responsible for the levee failures and extensive damages.... what else should be expected from inept government agencies? When will we learn that they are the problem... not the solution?
