nevada wood preserving plant

Did you know that NWP has been sold to a Canadian company named Stella-Jones? Do they have enough insurance to cover a major disaster with the chemicals they use that could kill all the residents of Silver Springs? or to relocate all of us in case of an accident? Hopefully they will not pollute our water supply. Is there a oversight committee to protect us? Let's let them know we are concerned and watching.

Interesting, from what I understand, NWP has a huge contract with PG&E to provide treated poles and certainly the plant has expanded in the several years since the stinky nightmare they subjected the residents of Silver Springs to, all the while denying their being the source of the odor (while our property values plummeted way below the levels of the rest of the nation after the real estate balloon popped.) Indeed the processes and chemicals used to preserve the wood poles for utility companies are, simply put, and in most cases it is by law, unfit for residential areas. This makes one wonder what on earth the decision makers of Lyon County and NDEP were thinking when they approved this industrial facility's locating so close to a reservoir used to hold water for agricultural purposes not to mention it is adjacent to residential neighborhoods. It is also within a few miles of a senior center and schools. Maybe the new owners will consider all of this and decide to move the plant since so much of the equipment is old anyway.
Knowing that close to 20% of our nation's SuperFund Cleanup Sites are former wood preserving locations is where much of the local concern and watchdogism comes from. Review some of the MSDS for the chemicals in use out there and you might agree with the research worldwide that totally supports the International Conventions and Rachel Carson too, who have called for a total worldwide banning of pentachlorophenol. Hopefully Stella-Jones will think twice if they are considering bringing back the use of creosote to this plant. Also we need to know about the earthquake safety of all of the equipment at the facility. If my water heater needs to be strapped o the walls, then what sort of earthquake safety measures are in place at this facility? What exactly is in all those tanks and towers and what events historically (spills of PCP, fires with toxic smoke....) demonstrate that a serious spill might indeed render our somewhat sleepy bedroom community uninhabitable. Do they have insurance to cover potential disasters? We need to research further and find out if there are medical issues we may should be watching out for. We know NDEP failed us in determining the source of the odors from 2006-2011 and still have yet to hear apologizies or assess fines or discuss damages for what the local residents had to endure while NWP was allowed to lie to us all the while polluting our air. Everyone knew, as they must have, that the odors came from their plant. Some of us noticed it more than others and were attacked for asking for remedies. NWP presented a supposed empirical study concluding that the smell likely did not come from them and used that as grounds to further attack the folks who spoke up because they were most impacted by what was going on. Word is the pant out there makes tons of money, so why not take some of that and relocate out of common human decency and stop all the lying and excuses. Bad enough we have radioactivity heading our way from the melt-down at the nuclear plant in Japan; chemicals used in wood preserving are known to be second only in how deadly and dangerous they are to radioactivity. But then, this is Nevada where the legislature has yet to see fit to make pseudo-epinephirne a prescription only drug. Again, a nationwide law of this sort would go a long way to diminishing yet another nightmare of rural America-easy meth making-just one more toxic chemical in the array of items that diminish our quality of life.
