Katie Green said this snow was not all that unusual. She was wrong. The magnitude of the snow was very unusual for this time of year. Before today, Tulsa had seen just one snowfall greater than 1.5 inches after March 21st in recorded history, which goes back well over 100 years. That was on March 31st of 1926 when 3.5 inches fell. 6.2 inches officially fell in Tulsa today, which blew that record out of the water for the greatest snowfall so late in the season. The latest 4 inch snow in Tulsa had been on the 20th back in 1924. Today we exceeded 6 inches 8 days later on the 28th. So yes it was indeed an extremely rare event for so late in the season.

That's Oklahoma weather for you. lol I knew this was coming though. We didn't have enough to just quit winter without one more big bash. lol At least I got to tell one very annoying someone an I told you so earlier today. That was worth every inch of snow.

Actually we had a significant snowfall of at least 4 inches in April 2003.

Big Steve - There has been measurable snow 3 times in April in Tulsa recorded history...1 1/2 inches on April 12, 1957, 0.4 inches on April 5, 2007, and 0.3 inches on April 9, 1973. There's been a trace a few other times, but not even that in 2003. This is the latest snow has been on the ground at my house in Tulsa since I moved here in 1990. Perhaps St. Louis had 4 inches in April 2003...I know they've had April snows before many times.

You can fish for rainbows at lower Illinois at Gore, a bit south and east of Muskogee. Also have a trout stream in Sapulpa, can't remember name. Occasionally get to go with my brother to Siloam Springs,ARK, where he is a member of a club that has private water. There is also somewhere down by Broken Bow, but I haven't been there. The Tulsa Fly Fishers Association has stocked the pond in the tulsa park behind the strip mall at 71 and memorial's southwest side.

If you watched the whole broadcast she had all kinds of statistics to back up her claim. Check the statistics before you criticize. Just because it was not within your memory, doesn't mean it did not happen. I even remember one in about 69 when we were out of school for a week at the end of March for snow that took out the electricity all over town.

I moved to Tulsa from St. Louis in April 2003. Less than 1 week later we had over 4" of snow on the ground. Like this storm it came in quickly and was pretty much melted the next day.

grandma of 10 - I'm one of the ones in charge of the statistics...we keep the data and compile it at the NWS. All the other big March storms were much earlier in March (the ones in Tulsa...not the panhandle), which if you looked at Katie's stats (which she got from us and the Norman NWS!), you would have seen that too just as she should have. Had it been early March, it would not have been rare...the 28th it was for Tulsa...not so much for the panhandle. The Tulsa World actually talked to us late Saturday afternoon and got it right in the paper about how rare the magnitude of this late spring storm was in Tulsa...as I said never before in recorded weather history had we even seen a 4 inch snow in Tulsa this late...or anytime after the 21st.

Big Steve - See the paragraph above...no snow occurred in Tulsa that April...give me the date and I can give you the conditions every hour that date in Tulsa...we have them all for the past 100+ years right here in our library. In 2003, there was no March snow either, but December and February were both very snowy that winter, leading to a tie for the second snowiest winter on record that winter.

grandma of 10 - As far as 1969 goes, in March that year, the total snow was 1.3 inches. If that shut down schools for a week and knocked out power all over town, let me just say I'm glad it takes a lot more than that now to shut down the whole city!

grandma of 10 - In all fairness, you did say around 69...there was a big snow in March of 68, but it wss on the 11th...not the last week of the month...there was also a big one on the 16th of March in 1970...in fact that one was the 3rd latest 4 inch snow in Tulsa history...behind the 20th in 1924 and yesterday.

Interesting. Thx. I usually go to MO to do my trout fishing, but I'll have to try some of those. Nice to have some close places. Are they catch & release?

So really it was unusual just not all that unusual. lol The time is off by a week or two and the amount was larger than usual, but nobody is really surprised by this, right? I wonder if the theory that our calendar is off a bit has anything to do with this? Or maybe it has to do with those ninos and ninas playing in the oceans? lol Some farsiders will probably claim it is even global warming. Since you've got easy access to the stats has there ever been snowfall in Oklahoma in the summer? I think I heard a very old gentleman once say something about snow in June in Oklahoma, but he also liked to pull my leg about other things. lol

Well....I guess I imagined moving furniture etc. in the snow then. I don't give a crap what your stats say. I know what I saw & when I saw it!

Daily Horoscope for December 26

Capricorn

Mercury retrograde in your sign will cause some friction between you and other people during coming weeks. Matters that have been bubbling away in the background will come to the boil, forcing you to do something about them. Try not to overreact, nor to create a crisis out of something that's really very minor. You should also keep a strong sense of fair play and pay attention to every little detail.
