Fairsport Schools and Sports...

What's with the Fairport school district's obsession with sports? It seems incredible to me that a district that so often antes up for excessive spending on athletics has an ongoing debate over all-day kindergarten when 96% of the state already has this. Now we are looking at stadium lights? Really? The inside scopp is that the guy who owns Mark's Pizzeria is willing to ante up 50% of the cost as his children are athletes in the district. O.K.- what about the other 50%? Suddenly half the cost of stadium lights is now something beneficial to the taxpayers in general?
I have often said that for a district that spends so much on sports and where it seems to be something of over-stressed importance in the schools you'd expect Fairport to bring home every frikken state title. Instead, districts like Pittsford where there is a greater emphasis on academics still manage to be just as competitive in high school athletics.
No more excessive financial or mental investment in athletics in Fairport- especially stupid stadium lights. Give me a break, people- get your priorities straight!

I agree, I went through the Fairport School system and there was nothing for we kids who didn't want to play sports.
I would have rather learned how to build something or glean some useful skill. It's never been shown that sports helps anyone.Studies have shown that school sports produce people who are more apt to do drugs, engage in risky sexual behaviors, cheat and other things. I was one of the poorest kids in my class and all the privileged rich kids did well in this town, not people like me who grew up in poor families with violent alcholics. It always felt like noone in school cared except to scream at me every once in awhile to do my homework, an easy task when people are screaming and breaking things in your home 24/7. In short, it felt like, "Noone cares up about we un-pretty,poor kids who could'nt punch our way out of a paper bag, what are we here for?".

I don't agree that sports aren't a positive influence, but my point was that they are over-emphasized and over-funded in Fairport to the detriment of other programs.

I hope you get to read this Mark .... Ala Teen/ Ala Non are wonderful organizations. Give it a shot, you have nothing to lose & everything to gain... You've had a rough start in life but there is help out there & the people who participate in these organizations instantly have a room of people who are kind & understanting. They will support you and love you the very moment you walk in the door.

Where is the information about how much Fairport spends on sports? I'm a tax payer and parent. I really would like to know.
Also, learning to compete is something we need much more of. Automatic promotion and praise for mediocre work doesn't continue once kid get outside the school system.
