A better way to tax

Full story: TwinCities.com

With the budget shortfall looming and the reluctance of the governor to consider tax increases, this might be a good time to consider revamping how the state collects taxes.

I like most of your tax proposals, Ted. I'd like to be optimistic that someday it might happen but I think it will take a minor miracle to get it past the lobby groups for tax lawyers, tax accountants, and other special interests who have tweaked the current tax laws so much so that they are either taxed less than anybody else or they are making tons of money off the complexities of the current system and do not want it changed.

Easy solution that would even the playing field for all. People that make above 150k shall pay a 100% tax on that money. No one needs more than that to live anyways.

With the budget shortfall looming and the reluctance of the governor to consider tax increases, this might be a good time to consider revamping how the state collects taxes.

It is well known that the "underground cash economy" represents a significant loss of income tax revenue that could make up the deficit, if captured. One way of capturing this lost tax would be to scrap the income tax altogether and replace it with a higher and broader state sales tax.

Not progressive, you say? The solution is elegant in its simplicity. Since the sales tax reaches everyone from babies to illegal immigrants, it would be fair and appropriate to give a fixed sales tax rebate to every citizen. For those with low incomes, the rebate would be a far more significant percentage of their income than for those in higher income brackets. Families with children would also get a larger rebate.

This system would not only collect taxes that are now lost to the underground economy, but would simplify the entire tax system and cost the government far less to maintain than the current system. The rebate could be adjusted each year as necessary to balance the budget.

Its called the "Fair Tax" and I completely agree with it.. But it would be a Federal Sales tax and everyone will pay as they spend..

Gee with your logic were would the incentive be to better your self?? What if someone made that 150k in the first 6 Months?? Then it would be vacation time.. Do you really think they will work knowing it will be all taxed??

You are joking right? What gives YOU the right to decide how much anyone can make. You obviously lack the skills to make a good living and therefore don't want anyone else to either. You are an extreme left winger who wants others to do for you what you cannot, or will not do for yourself.

Even knowing that you're joking, it still is an interesting excersize in extreme DFL logic.(I won't say what DFL stands for, but the first word is "Dumb", the last word is "Liberals", and the middle word is up to you).

I wonder how the government is going to get along without any money. No one will make over $150k because there won't be any jobs. Have you ever been hired by a poor person? Maybe in your case, it would be more appropriate to ask, "Have you ever been hired?"

About those student loans - not too long ago, student loans were handled by the government, not private banking interests. Now, about three-quarters of this country’s college lending is carried out through the private program, known as the Federal Family Education Loan Program. Under this ridiculous arrangement, lenders are paid extravagant subsidies to make student loans that are virtually risk-free, since they are guaranteed by the government.

Direct government lending is less expensive and more reliable. Also, according to the Congressional Budget Office, the country would save $94 billion over the next decade by switching completely to direct lending.

No we must control who makes what. Look at what 8 years of Bush policies did to this country. Now is the time to get that money back. People will keep working for the good of all people. If they don't, then we should be able to take some of their property away for not contributing ot the common good.

I'm a staunch Democrat, the most progressive, tree-hugging feminist you're likely to meet, and even I think this is rediculous. Of course we need taxes to pave the streets and pay the cops, but if I'm ever lucky enough to earn over $150 K, it won't be to give it all to the government. I'll pay my fair share - the rest is mine. People will keep working for the good of all people? Are you crazy? I volunteer quite a lot for groups I choose to, but this business where I sit in my cube is certainly not a volunteer choice!

Look, it is necessary to give the poor a chance. We need to help these people out. It is time to redistribute the income as it has been skewed starting with Reagan. We need to get rich people to give up their money to help the poor out. It really is a selfish thing that people want to keep that much money for themselves.

You are spouting a right wing exaggerated parody of stances the Democrats do not take, calling yourself "Go DFL" to make the real DFL look bad. Busted!
