Santoin Russell did get arrested but not for Nina's death.
A man charged last month with strangling an O'Fallon man was a suspect eight months before in the beating death of a woman in Fairmont City.

Santoin Russell, 23, O'Fallon, was charged Sept. 25 with the first-degree murder of Blake Harvey, 46, at Harvey's home at 621 E. State St. in O'Fallon.

Russell was a suspect in the murder of Karanina G. Polk, 29, who was found beaten to death Feb. 3 at the First Western Inn at 1941 Collinsville Road in Fairmont City, said Madison County Sheriff's Maj. John Lakin, who was deputy commander of the Major Case Squad that investigated Polk's death.

"We presented our case to the St. Clair County State's Attorney's Office," Lakin said. "The case was taken under advisement and we released Mr. Russell."

In March, Terryon D. Triplett, 21, of 322 W. H St. in Belleville, was charged in Polk's murder.

State's Attorney Bob Haida cited Illinois Supreme Court rules which bar him from identifying suspects or discussing evidence in cases, but said, "We are considering charges against other suspects in the (Polk) case."

Polk was beaten in the head with a tire iron, according to the indictment filed April 11 against Triplett.

The Major Case Squad was activated for Harvey's murder just five months later. Harvey's criminal history included possession of heroin and marijuana. In June, he was charged with driving under the influence and battery. Both charges were pending at the time of his death.

Polk had been convicted of possession of drug paraphernalia. Police charged her in January with prohibited conduct after police said she engaged in "sexual activity" on the parking lot of Emerson Park Metro Station in East St. Louis.

Russell, a former O'Fallon football star, was charged in January with possession of more than 7 ounces of marijuana.

At that time, Russell was on probation for battery and criminal damage to property. Russell originally was charged with felony aggravated battery and criminal damage property in 2004, after police said he struck a man in the head and smashed another man's car windows. The charge was reduced to a misdemeanor as part of a plea deal, and Russell received probation.

Probation officers filed at least three times to revoke Russell's probation. The last time was three days after Polk's murder. Probation officers filed to revoke Russell's probation because he was charged with domestic battery, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of cannabis and never reported the new crimes to his probation officer.

At the time, Russell was being held for Polk's murder. He was released Feb. 21 after serving a week in county jail. His probation was extended for another year, but he didn't make it.

Police said Russell strangled Harvey --- with only 150 days left on his probation sentence.

How could this country waste so much time and money on stupid stuff and other countries when we don't even have a program to help our own people. The people on drugs or who are homeless need our love, attention, and money. These people are our future and we look the other way when they need help the most. How can we do this to our own people? I just cannot get over what happened to Nina and I don't think I ever will. I feel as though I need to do something. I just don't know what. We need to stop others from traveling down the same road she lived on for so many years. I just cannot understand how it got this far. I wish God would help us all now and not just when it comes time for forgiveness or to get into heaven. We need Him here and NOW!

My name is Candace. i knew of Nina. I was only 16 years old when i enter the streets of east st louis, i am now 19 and i am in fairview, I have to go to Tavis Doyle trail, I belive Tavis use to date Nina, Tavis is also my ex. Tavis Doyle you can google him east st louis... I know what it feels like to be hook on crack, to sell yourself so short, I walk dem streets for 6 months until I was lock up and sent back to Kentucky, It sad to say, I kno what goes on out there and what them women face People look at them like we are some kind of animals, Yes we choose to go out there, but then our choosing get so low when we dont have no choice, The drugs take over us, the pimps take over us, we are lost, prisoner.. These women, girls, who gets raped and beated everyday, Its real sad and i know how it feels. I never met Nina but heard great things, I knew 2 of the people who is charge for her death... I am sorry for your lost!! you need to think about this.. Now Nina is no longer lOST.. she no longer lost to the streets, to the drugs.. She has been set free... With nomore pain... i wish i can say the same for me.
