Wait until the levy is voted on before you start planning to get more money from people!
Take it as a compliment that I respond to you-you seem reasonable!
Some long term fixes include:
Applying for Grants.
Elect people who do not see government as the answer to everything.
Being transparent to your community (publish regular reports), answer why WSS Equipment spends so much time parked at a local eatery.
Survey your community needs (More dry hydrants versus more Tanker trucks-Park equipment in places away from VFD for better access).
More to follow if your interested.
Unfortunately i am not from WSS so i cannot speak for the way that they do business. However, i do know what it is like to write a grant to fema and not get anything year after year. These grants can be extremely hard to get and it often depends on the amount they are giving out in a year. Some departments can get grants depending on the area they cover while others do not. The dry hydrants are a good idea to do and some departments are in the process of looking for grants to cover that. And unfortunately parking trucks away from the normal fire station is not feasible for most departments in the county. A sub station would require much more money than any department has available. A building to adequately hold a substation would cost upwards of 100,000 due to the regulations it must meet and it would have to have people to run that station on a regular basis which most departments do not have. I can guarantee you that right now almost every department is an open book and will show you the figures that we have came up with for the past year. I cannot publish them on here but please stop by a local department and just ask to see the operating cost. It is actually quite staggering when it is looked at.

Thanks gbcfire you made my point better than I did...

I would buy the hardware for a dry hydrant, if I could get help (volunteer)to install. Others in community would do the same-Government is not needed!

I would donate land for a place to park fire equip and do the procedures to keep the equip ready to roll.$100K for a parking place can only be justified by a stupid government agency-Government is not needed.

"almost every department is an open book and will show you the figures that we have". What a cop out!! EVERY DEPT SHOULD BE AN OPEN BOOK!!
They hide behind rules and regs by saying the government will not let them do that. FOIA requests take months if not years to be answered. Government is not needed.

VFDs have to pay taxes/fees to state agencies who use this money to come up with very costly rules and regs that turn a donation into a tax that could cost the person who made the donation their property. Government is not only not needed, it is a burden that prevents me from helping my community, because if I give a dime- they (government)start scheming on how to take a dollar (even if its my last dollar).

What is really staggering is that we keep electing the same rascals that got us into this mess.

Old Man, you hit the nail on the head with your last sentence, we all gripe and complain because "most" of our elected officials do nothing to help those who elected them, yet we WILL NOT give a new person a chance, we keep electing the same people into office. We set time limits on a few offices, yet others become home to most elected officials - they go out when they are too old to run or they are carried out in a box.
It is high time "we" do something instead of complain.!!

You know it's sad, the $40,000.00 we are paying for this special election could really help out the food banks in the area. But does the county commission care? Hell no, spend, spend, spend thats their motto. Had this been a reasonable tax that had been well thought out and put on the General Election ballot I believe most taxpayers wouldn't have had a problem with it. But to try and pull another fast one like the school bond levy with their special election (it worked for them once, lets try it again) Method, the people of Greenbrier County have caught on to thier dirty antics and won't tolerate it anymore. I have already voted "no" (Early Voting) and I urge you to do the same. "NO NEW TAXES". Also to remind everyone, The Federal spending cuts did not pass today so we are heading for another recession, one more reason we do not need another tax increase.

I sure hope the people of greenbrier county have caught on to special elections yes it cost the tax payers $40,000 plus to put on this election and the food banks could have used that money or the fire departments with out all B.S. and been realist in what they ask for not a new tax we are being taxed to death now!

I have a GREAT PLAN!The original fire fees the state collected and dispersed to the departments is from insurance policies, they take 1%. Now I know this is a bad time to be raising taxes, but this 1% hasn't changed since guess when,,,1931!Thats right boys and girls,81 years of the same tax rate,so would a .5% or 1% change in this rate kill us,I don't think so,and it would be state wide, evenly applied.Another thing that would be a great benifit is for all volunteer departments to be EXEMPT from workmens compensation, afterall it is SUPPOSED to be based on SALARY and COMPENSATION so why do they fall under it to begin with?????

I lied it has only been the law for 20 years not 80 but still, this increase makes more sense.

WOW! It's terribly sad at how most of the comments on this thread are based on "NO TRUTHS" rather than ACTUAL FACT! Assuming things is the biggest mistake one can make. Like the comment about the fuel for parades!? WTF? And then if they didn't show up to the parades and disappointed all of the children, I'm sure there would be something else to gripe about. We know how everyone loves drama in GBR. Co.

It is truly disheartening that you people have all the time in the world to sit behind a computer rather than going down to the courthouse and taking a LOOK at PUBLIC RECORDS and see how much the departments really receive. See that monies acquired from the hotel/motel tax can be spent on.

We should do more for the MANY VOLUNTEERS risking their lives to protect everyone of you and your beloved possessions!
