Endorsement: Fairhaven Board of Health
The incumbent is lacking

September 04, 2013 4:05 PM

Fairhaven's special election is about more than turbines. It's about putting somebody on the Board of Health that is honest and at least has the intellectual capacity to tell right from wrong. What qualifies to serve is clear and clearly the incumbent is lacking. The political signs in the yards of some who I had believed were friends make me wonder what drives people and what friendship means. I have to believe more goes into voting than yard signs and sign holding.

To those who know me or only think they know me, know this: Continuing to support individuals like the former Selectman or Peter DeTerra you are helping destroy the fabric of this town. This special election is about putting some body on the Board of Health who knows enough to make the right decision and has the courage to follow through. A representative democracy can only work if its representatives have the intellectual capacity and the moral integrity to understand and do their jobs.

Over the summer, thinking those who were suffering with sleep deprivation could be placated with a short-term fix, DeTerra finally voted to allow the Health Board to declare them a nuisance and to order a 7 to 7 shutdown compromise. A few weeks later, the boss of Palmer Capital and Fairhaven Wind Gordon Dean and his partners Sumul Shah and Jim Sweeney ignored the order and turned the turbines back on. Regardless of what one thinks of the turbines, this was law-breaking. The health board met and DeTerra and Lopes said OK, never mind. Why didn't the board drag this developer into court and ask a judge to order daily fines? Why instead did the health board ignore Barbara Acksen who was the health board's representative in talks with the developer? Why did DeTerra and Lopes vote for a motion to turn the turbines back on without declaring the nuisance ended? Why did the motion sound like lawyers for the developer had written it? Did the town lawyer write it?

What happened to me is a matter of public record it was an issue in the spring election it still is. I made it so and I bring it up again. Brian Bowcock penned a letter filled with false accusations in an attempt to damage my reputation. DeTerra helped him and repeated the lies at the North Fairhaven Improvement Association debate this past spring. I can only surmise it was because I disagreed with them and had the audacity to speak up. I like to believe this issue had something to do with making the poison pen writer a former selectman. His partner in this twisted endeavor, Peter DeTerra, is getting a second chance for re-election.

What you may think about turbines or me is not the issue. It isn't just that Peter won't wage a fight for what's right; the problem is he doesn't know what's right. Is that the kind of man you want representing you?
