I was a police woman in the early days, in Kansas. I worked from 1972-1982. Please convey to Officer Smith's family my very deepfelt and sincere condolences. The 'brotherhood' feeling never goes away, and I ache any time I read of incidents like this, especially reading that she had retired from the 'big city' and come to Fairfield, only to sacrifice herself for what appears to have been a rather petty incident. I cannot possibly understand her family's pain, but I do so sincerely appreciate the job she did. I did it, too, and it's a hard one that is never appreciated except by a few citizens, and ALL of her fellows.
