I did a study a few years ago against the question: Just how many INNOCENT victims like Ed Bailey are killed by DWI drivers in this country per year, as I had always heard the "total" of around 17,000 per year(40% of all causes), but nothing about their victims. After a study that began with local police (to determine even IF they report victims separately) and it turns out that they do and have been for the past decade. I followed that to the state police to determine where that information went from there - It ends up with the feds' NHTSA and its FARS division. What I found in several commissioned reports was that one out of every three DWI-caused deaths was that of an innocent person, a family member, a friend, and strangers in about equal numbers. How does this tally overall? It's comes to around 5,100 innocents killed, and 13 times as many injured - NOT counting the drunks themselves. No other drug causes so much measurable public damage as DWI drivers do - not even close, yet, although the information is, albeit difficult to obtain, publically available, we hear virtually nothing about it: Gov't protection of it's tax income from alcohol and protection of brewers against prohibition, the latter which I'm totally against.
It's a stinking shame!
