AT&T recently bought out Alltel. I was wondering if anyone knew if Alltel phones had service in the Rose Hill and Ewing area?

And AT&T bought the Alltel towers from Verizon. Verizon is putting antennas on all the Alltel towers in Lee County to keep service in the areas where they "roamed" off Alltel towers. And no AT&T phones will not work on the Verizon towers when AT7T switch over to their service. This is why Verizon is installing new antennas. And the western most tower that AT&T will have in Lee County is on Sandy Ridge in Jonesville.

I've googled and googled before I even made the first post. I'm not saying you're wrong, but everything I can find says that AT&T will have the Alltel towers in Lee County. Look at this map of acquired areas broken down by carrier.http://www.cellularmap s.com/alltel_divest.shtml

1. Verizon bought all of Alltel about two years ago.
2. Due to FCC regulations that there must be at least two cell phone carriers in any given market Verizon was forced to either sell their Verizon or Alltel assets in Lee County (among other markets throughout the country which is referenced in the link in the previous post.)
3. AT&T purchased the Alltel properties from Verizon in Lee, Wise, Buchanan, Dickenson, and Russell Counties (among other properties throughout the country).
4. During the transition process Alltel phones were allowed access to all of Verizon's towers which allowed Alltel customers to get service in the Ewing/Rose Hill area whereas they did not before.
5. The transition from Alltel to AT&T in the counties mentioned above was complete last week and Alltel customers began receiving their new AT&T phones and were allowed to activate to use them on the newly formed AT&T network.
6. Due to FCC regulations from the sale of the Alltel properties, AT&T was forced to keep the CDMA network (used by Verizon) running for the next three years to honor the roaming agreements previously from Alltel.
7. AT&T phones use a UTMS/GSM network which is different than the CDMA that Verizon uses therefore AT&T customers cannot roam off of Verizon towers and cannot get service in Ewing/Rose Hill.

Yea I got word of that from another forum. I went ahead and got a Verizon HTC Incredible off of the interet. So far I'm liking it a lot. Thanks for the info though.

Do you know what the future holds for Verizon coverage in Lee County? We live in the Tri-Cities but travel to LeeCo often and have Verizon. We need to re-up our plan soon and get new phones. Do we stick with Verizon, or move over to AT&T?

Stick with Verizon. It's coverage here on the lower end especially will be all you can get.

Well at&t published in the powell valley paper the tower was going up in ewing, and about at&t buying Verizon's towers, its been mentioned by Verizon several places on the internet. I think it was "at&t purchase of Verizon towers in southwest va" I'm not sure though. And I lost all service with Verizon recently. So I took that as comfermation to those statement's reality.

Well Verizon is not and will not be pulling out of the wireless market in Lee County or Southwest Va. They just moved some new equipment into the tower site on Hines Hill above the animal hospital this week. It is a ongoing progress as their 4G investment is taking place. The outage that affected some types of phones last weekend was a switch trouble and has been fixed.
