Below, you'll see what Ferndale Public Schools said on its webpage about the terrible bus accident in which a child was seriously wounded. Notice how they made sure that readers would know (1) this is an Indian child, and (2) there is a "cooperative relationship" between the tribe and the school district. Does this mean the school district to take credit when things go well and point its finger when they don't? Where is REAL leadership?
Ferndale School District has learned that a seven year old Lummi Nation student was hit by a Lummi Nation school bus yesterday afternoon (January 10) on Lummi Shore Drive in Ferndale. The boy was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center.
Ferndale School District shares a cooperative relationship with Lummi Nation so there is a real connection and concern when any type of event takes place, as there would be for any Ferndale student. The district has reached out and offered assistance to students and staff of Lummi Nation as needed.
In the meantime, our caring thoughts are with the boy and his family.
We know that Lummi Nation shares the same philosophy as the district when it comes to the safety of students. We strive to make sure students are safe not only at school, but in getting to and from school.
