This Anchorage Daily News letter of mine disappeared online--unable to find it when Googling but somehow in a roundabout way came across it:

Park officials use guns, so let us

Re: "Allowing Guns In Parks Doesn't Seem to Bother Alaskans" (Craig Medred, Dec. 6): It's difficult to argue for more firearms given the horrific trauma people must experience due to gun violence, but as for allowing protection against bear attacks in national parks, this is a step in the right direction. National park officials use firearms for bear defense but have been advising the general public to use pepper spray. This latest action by the Bush administration to allow firearms in national parks is right in that if government officials have the freedom of choice in a bear attack, citizens should too.-- Chris Deile Bellingham, Wash.

(that's me--Bruce is my middle name; issue pertinent again as drought conditions in "Lower 48" are blamed for an increase of bear attacks in AZ and NM--3 in one month in Tonto National Forest [AZ] last summer; Continental Divide Trail goes through Silver City, NM yet Forest Service office in Silver City distributing "Be Bear Aware" pamphlets advising pepper spray for bear attacks. Northbound CDT hikers will be misinformed should they read that when coming through Silver City in the springtime. And although risk is low in NM, it increases up north, particularly in Glacier National Park where people there too are advised by Park officials to use pepper spray [while Park officials use firearms when responding to bear attacks]).

GNP has the most bear attacks in contiguous U.S., and black bears, although not often it seems here in the Lower 48, do attack and kill people--British Columbia has an ongoing problem with that.

Yeah, the BLM maps of the CDT cover quite a bit of the National Forest around Silver City. Bought Jim Wolf's CDT guidebooks/maps for $300 years ago, had the maps all highlighted and was preparing for CDT when backpack was stolen with all that stuff in it. Looks like though those BLM maps @ only $4 apiece would have been a cheaper resource. Unsure....that was about 10 years ago, and do recall Wolf had BLM maps in there as well. No matter--way too ill to do a thru-hike of CDT anymore. But Betty Curtis (on YouTube) is still awesome:

The video(s) w/ Betty Curtis singing "Invece No" onstage--not the one with only the photo's. Gotta see her in action! lol

The Betty Curtis Invece No Sanremo performance video that runs for 3:12 is unquestionably the best one though. Have always loved the shot @2:15-2:25.

And the Nicole Legendre video "Loin de Toi" by valetdecoeurs has turned out to be an all-time fave. Only found it about 2-3 weeks ago, it's really good. Unfortunately, the only other one by Nicole on Youtube is a song called "Tu Veux Tout Changer"--it's from the French "Ye Ye" period--brought to mind Katty Line.
