EVERETT, Mass.— Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria and Las Vegas gambling magnate Steve Wynn are planning to discuss their initial talks about the possibility of developing a casino in the city.

The two have scheduled a press conference at Everett City Hall on Wednesday.

Mayor Carlo DeMaria said on Monday that he's "excited to see how Wynn's vision for this site may complement my vision" for the future.

In May, Wynn suspended efforts to bring a $1 billion casino resort to Foxborough on land to be leased from New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft after the town turned aside efforts to negotiate a development proposal.

Suffolk Downs and Caesars Entertainment have applied for casino development rights at the East Boston race track.

The state's casino law allows for the construction of up to three casinos.

Our own firefighters can't get a meeting with him to negotiate their contract,
but he clears his schedule for an out of state billionaire that waves some money under his nose.

Can you imagine Steve Wynn's first impression of Mayor McCheese?

Probably thinking
"Damn, I could trick this buffoon into selling me his entire town for a bucket of chicken."

Does it really matter what we taxpayers think? The Mayor does what the Mayor wants to do - it's always about money with him. This city blows.
bad idea

What would the life expectancy be of anyone walking out of an Everett casino with a pocket full of winnings?

The muggers would mug the other muggers to get to him first.

A Casino in Everett is the worst idea since electing this ass clown mayor, which I didn't. Try to sell your house now. Anyone wanna move next to Foxwoods? Of course not. The traffic, the crime, the noise, the problems we can't even think of yet that a casino will bring. You are exactly right about where his priorities are. He'll claim of course that it will bring millions to the city, lower tax rates, blah blah blah. No one will want to live here. Does anyone sincerely believe that he is out for the welfare of the citizens of Everett? Please. If that were true he would have met with the firefighters, and would look for actual solutions to the problems we face. He has stars in his eyes, a lifetime of 5 star meals, and likely some type of position with the Casino when the voters wake up and dump him. Think of the people who will lose everything by spending money they don't have. Look in any variety store and see the people spending half their paycheck on scratch tix and keno. Those problems will grow and spread to other people, good people who will be enticed by the heavy advertising and allure. You can say that's their problem, but it will become yours when they have to get on the system. Casinos are a black hole, they produce nothing. People spend money and walk out empty handed, there are no goods purchased, it just puts money in the Casino's pockets. The house wins every time, which means folks lose. Hey even I take a ride to Foxwoods now and then, but what it does to the community is simply devastating. Let Suffolk Downs have it, its a better spot, next to the airport, and that section of Rt 1A is a shithole anyway and can only improve. That will bring in all the jobs and employment, just in a better, smarter location. Like your city? NO CASINO!!!!!!!!!!

I'm the idiot? I'm a homeowner worried about my property value and my kids safety. You think this will improve the city of Everett? The city will disappear and just become the casino along with everything that goes with it. I'll have to try to sell my house, take a worse beating than I would today, and move out. Of course, you being the shrewd one, I'd be happy to sell you my house if this deal goes through. You seem to be willing to pay good money to live next to a billion dollar hotel. My taxes won't go down, only a fool would believe that. The argument becomes "imagine how high they'd be without this casino". It doesn't matter, it's not going to happen. I wonder what this "exploration" is going to cost us. Hopefully he bails before the mayor offers to do a feasibility study that will likely cost thousands.

The infrastructure of Everett and the surrounding towns cannot handle the traffic this will bring to the area - can't get through Everett Square now as it is. You need to be a native to the area to even begin to understand Santilli Circle's configuration !!!

How many palms will get greased for this deal???

Our police dept. cannot handle the crowds this would bring, let alone the fire dept.

Would this 'idea' have to be put on a ballot to be voted on ?? Did it in Foxborough ???

NO CASINO, NO WAY !!!!! We ALL need to get proactive in shooting this idea down and the sooner the better !!! Foxborough did it, we can do it too - we have to !!!!!!

I don't see that a casino can hurt anything. This city is a shithole now & no one wants to live here, so what's the difference? Lower taxes, jobs, & improved (greatly) roads will have to be part of the package.

Sometimes you just have to trust the instincts of an outsider, someone without ties to the community, someone who calls the shots straight down the middle because neither side favors him.

A comment taken from a Boston newspaper

"Did you see the interview with the mayor of Everett? Doesn't seem like the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Well, he is a tried and true democrat. But I agree with your assessment of his speaking skills. He makes Mumbles Menino sound like freakin William Shakespeare".

Talk about hitting the nail right on the head!!! ROTFLMAO!!!!!

I agree with red, maybe it would be nice, new restaurants, maybe shows and celebrities. Most of u are so negative, nothing has even been decided yet and as far as being worried about your children, reaaly how often do you let your children play or even hang out in that area!

I admit,
I haven't been back there in 20 years,

But in the 1990's I drove to Atlantic City,
and remember the slum surrounding it.

I had never seen so many bordered up, half burned down houses all in a few block area.
First time I ever saw people sitting on couches on their front porches as well.

Everett ought to fit the mold for Atlantic City perfectly.
