When I was a child I often visited my step-grandfather's farm in the summertime (1950s). He was aged and infirm at the time but was still maintaining a small farm a few miles from Effingham. Does anyone recall the Christie family. My grandfather was Arthur, and his brother was Jim, who had a farm east of town. with a large white barn and the name "Christia" on it. My aunt was Alberta (Molly) Estes. Another aunt, Lee, married Frank Oswald in the late 50s.

I just went came back to this site after posting so many months ago. Lena was my aunt also, my father's sister. She moved to KS after her first husband died, where she met Frank. Molly was an aunt also, and very good to me when I visited the farm. For part of a year I attended 1st grade at a one room school near Arthur Christie's farm; my teacher was Glady (or Gladys) Christie.

I was lucky enough to pass thru Effingham during my vacation. My grandmother Anna Shell was born there in 1900 my Great Great Grandfather Henry Shell and his wife Sarah lived in Effingham around 1857. I had a fantastic visit and the locals were wonderful. This was one of the high lights of my trip and I cannot thank the people of Effingham enough. I wish I could have spent more time there. Thank You for everything

My grandparents lived in town just south of the Bank and behind Shifflets Hardware store and Funeral home. Grandpa was a friend of the Christies. There were card games played at Christies as I recall.

Effingham was always the place to go during the summer and stay for the fair. The USA needs more Effinghams, and fast!
