Some of the POS that walk the streets of Evarts day in and day out are a poor excuse for human beings. Nasty looking, sucking them cigs and popping them pills, makes me ashamed to be from Evarts.

Don't take it personally. You know how it is on here. You make a comment someone doesn't like and they give it back. Topix is fun as long as you don't let it get to you.

I have a lot of pleasant memories of EVARTS from
the 50's and 60's. Most of my forefathers were from
Clover Fork. Evarts was a very notorious town
back when and there should be some movies made
of "The battle of Evarts" and some of the Shootouts
that occured there between the Fields and Turners.
Remember Devil Jim Turner.... He was one bad dude
that you wouldn't want to come up against. Shade
Fields was another notorious guy , but I knew him
and he had changed from a bad guy to a very respectable and good man. He is gone now and I
hope he is with Jesus. Things were rough and tough
in Evarts back then...more so than in the wild west
as Evarts was a frontier town in it's own time.
We should be proud to be related to people of
Evarts and it should be noted that everyone in
Evarts is related so we have to be extra careful
not to say anything bad about anyone here or we
might cause hard feelings. Peace and Happiness
to all. JIM

Thanks Wabbit- it was nice of you to respond and
I would like to hear more about Evarts. I rode my
Harley there about maybe 4 or 5 years ago and went
all the way to KENVIR. I had some Relatives who
lived there and I am a descendant of The Holmes
clan that were in Holmes Mill. I remember the
VTC bus lines and I used to ride them from Harlan
town to Evarts and back. Some people that I
knew and remember from the past: Joner and Edith
Tackett (Joner was Chief of police in Evarts),
Mary Tackett,Judy Tackett, Bobbie Day, Irving
and Sally Dotson, Hamp Fields, Nellie Fuson,
Harve Lewis-Just to name a few. I used to
drive from Jonesville, VA to Evarts every Saturday
in the 50's, miss it a lot. Well wishes, JIM

Man, this is the best thread I have ever read on here. I am so proud to hear the two of you talk. Evarts has grown soft over the years Jim. If we still had the devil Jim's from your time, and the trog's, turp's, and Tally's from Wabbit's time, maybe we wouln't be getting run over today. You know what they say though, "live by the gun and die by the gun". I am younger than the two of you, but I have heard and seen my share. Once again, it's good to hear you all talk times about our great little town.

Hey Youngin, Thanks for the comment. Yes I think
Evarts is very historically notorious and there was a lot of everything happening there. I just
was reminiscing and thinking about some of the
things like the "Blistered Cat" where I used to
eat hamburgers for lunch on Saturdays and maybe
you remember the "White Elephant" up at Shields.
Some other Relatives on mother's side of the family
were the Smith's, Cawood's and Middleton's.
Merle Middleton (Theodore's brother) owned at least
part of the VTC (Verda Transport Company) lines
and Theodore (former Harlan County High Sheriff)
owned the Tri-State-Lines bus co. in Big Stone Gap.
Bascom Smith in Baxter was my Uncle. Bascom passed
away in 2006. My aunt Bell Smith Gibson lived up
on Evarts hill. I remember drinking a few swigs
of Mountain Dew with Joner Tackett back in the
early 60's. Devil Jim is also a distant relative
but he killed James Middleton who was also one
of my relatives. They were on opposides concerning
the Civil War. Devil Jim Burned the Jonesville
Court House I believe and he buried the Lee County
Sheriff alive in a mud hole. The law was after him
and he high tailed it out west to Toledo,Wa. where
he lived until he got drunk and fell into a stove and burned up and was buried in the Toledo cemetary
there. Man that Civil War sure made people mean.
Well, Youngin, Wabbit and all Take Care and
keep on keeping on and stay in touch.
touch. JIM

Hey Eveybody- Did you know we should be extra proud
of Ashley Parker down in Harlan Town. She is an
actress and is starring in the movie "The Witches
of Oz". You can see her on face book or just
GOOGLE her. Her actress name is Ashe Parker.
She is an exceptionally beautiful girl and She
and her little daughter are both in the movie I understand. I believe the movie is going to be
filmed in Harlan. I don't know if it has already been filmed yet or not. It is good to know that
we have a movie star who lives in Harlan.
Just thought I would let you know if you don't
already know. Peace....JIM
