If you draw disability you cannot work period. If you draw welfare you cannot work period! If you draw SS. You can work up to $7000.

Why would you draw disability if you can work?

The only way to get paid cash is if you are contract labor and then you get a 1099 at the end of your contract and you are responsible for paying all taxes. Federal and state witholding, social security, and Medicare. Legally the contract must have a beginning date and an ending date at the time of hire.

Without federal and state aid programs, this county would dry up and blow away. Major coal owners may have this region convinced that coal keeps OUR economy going, but that is far from true. Social Security, Disability, Medicaid/Medicare, Food Stamps, Welfare, and Christian outreach programs is what keeps Harlan alive. Coal has never been a steady means of support for this county. It has had its highs and its lows, but "check day" has always been the same. Why do so many people criticize what keeps them a home in the mountains? The only dependable means of income in Harlan county is a fixed income. Without these programs there would be no hospitals, no schools, no restraunts, and no Wal-Mart. If it wasn't for check day and free healthcare, these places wouldn't survive here and most of you wouldn't have jobs. Could everyone work in the mines? If so, why do we have so many unemployed miners now? Coal mining alone would not keep this county alive. I know some idiot is going to get on here and say "tourism", but please, don't waste the letters. Look around and pay attention to how many people recieve some type of federal or state aid, so stop trashing the way folks live.

if you wanna see how or WHO draws a check, go to the post office or the bank on the 1st of the month and sit back and watch from the parking lot. You'd be amazed at the disabled folk that never drive or use a cane and junk at how the pull in there hop right out and RUN to get that check! lmao I think SS should set up undercover at all the hot spots they all hit up every month.

For a fact, you CAN receive Social Security Disibility and work! You need to follow the guidelines and limits though. And yes, you can work for cash, you just have to report monthly to social security office, pay taxes however you want to pay them, etc So the people you think might be "working & getting paid under the table" might surprise you to find out they're attempting to go back to full time work!

Its ashame that a disabled person on the draw has to get out and get a job, the goverment should just give them a raise on there check and leave the work to the abled people that need a job.

I agree, I would not mind getting cut a little more in taxes if I knew it was helping someone that needed it.

SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY needs to be raised; even after drawing my check I am forced to work in the logging woods five or six days a week at 10 to 13 hours a day. my employer knows I dray s.s. disability and hold it over my head and will only pay me $125.00 a day. I'm considering guiting him and turning him in for paying people in cash.

Do you know how hard and dangerous logging is? If this guy can work at that he can hold down a job.
