Where to donate used clothes

What do you do with those perfectly good clothes you no longer wear -- the trousers that grew a little too tight and sweaters that never left the shelf, the shirts you wore but once? In response to Tempo ...

Its a good idea, as people would not know they could donate the used clothes, it would be helpful to soo many others instead of just trashing them, thanks it helped me atleast

Thanks very much for publishing a list with telephone numbers, especially for organizations that do pickups. I just cleaned out my closet and have a giant box full of clothes but no car to drop them off at a donation center so I am very glad to have the contact info for those willing to do pickups. Hi I have a question, can you please tell me where your getting the phone numbers, from? I have alot of clothes that I want to donate...
But I dont know where to give them for charity?

Amvets, Purple Heart vets, Vietnam vets, Goodwill. Google all of them and you will find what you need.

My husband passed away recently and I have a lot of good clothes that I would like to donate to a worthy cause. Are there any places that offer clothes for homeless people or for people who need some better clothes to apply for jobs or to wear to work until they start making a better wage?

I would really like to be able to do this instead of donating to Goodwill(not that it is a problem) but haven't found any place to do this. I live between Elgin and Rockford, Illinois.

Amvets and Purple Heart are from the same family and their charitable status is highly questionable. I dont even think Goodwill still has trucks. The Salvation Army is, in my opinion, the only real charity in the used clothing business and their reputation for helping the needy is impeccable. Google them.

A lot of these places "Salvation army, Goodwill," take your thought to be donated clothes and sell them for a profit!! I want my stuff to go to people who can't afford to buy all of our stuff they're selling at Salvation Army, and Goodwill. I think the best thing to do is take it to a local church who will hand them out to people who come and ask them for help.

There are some shelters and churches in the Chicago area that use hte clothes for homeless and for women who are on shelters, these woman use the clothes for job seeking and such. I know that one of the churches is called "The Port" it is off Armitage. I did the food truck there for the homeless and the shelter that they have is very wonderful. Sorry I do not have a number, but Im sure that you can find it if you google it. They also give to men and boys. Good luck.
