I was in the bay area when the quake hit and I heard someone from Cinibar Sam's on the news talking about the event. I am glad everyone is ok and it was neat to hear someone from that great eatery talking about the shaking to the whole bay area.

Eureka is constantly shaking. There are earthquakes everyday in that area of California. I visited there thirty years ago and that very day we had a quake.
I would like it understood that the quaking is a manifestation of earth expansion. Our Planet earth is expanding and there is absolutely nothing we can do about it for the process has been ongoing for millions of years. Read the book " The Mysterious Receding Seas" and you will understand what is happening on earth beneath our feet.

the shake is just ABIOTIC OIL seeping to the surface, maybe we can rip down the pulp mill and put up oil wells instead.

Negatory.

The quake was centered roughly around Hawkins Bar. I've lived in the Hoopa/Willow Creek area for 15 years and not once can I remember feeling an earthquake. When I was living on the coast, I remember two. Hmmmmm.

Don't believe everything you read Guy. Earthquakes on the west coast are caused by the subduction of the Pacific plate beneath the North American plate... NOT because the planet is expanding. If anything it's shrinking as it cools.

It was a 5.4,that .2 is a big difference.
It was the most violent quake I have ever experienced even though I have been in seven-somethings.
It was not the roly-poly sort of quake I'm used to here in Ca.
It was similar to Alaskan quakes which jerk up,down and sideways violently. The first Ak quake I was in shocked me and I cursed involuntarily.I had always taken Ca quakes in stride.
I've not felt the four aftershocks. D in WC

No report of this quake on the National news. They reported several smaller ones in LA on the news this morning though. I guess that's life behind the Redwood Curtain.

Not one of you commenting would drain the oil from your cars engine and drive it ! That oil cools and lubricates your engine to keep it in good condition . Our Earth (volcanics) uses the oil for the very same reason , and yet we sit back and let them run the Earth dry . The "plates" need oil for lubrication , the volcanoes use it for cooling , and the oil between the plates and the core of this earth is what keeps the plates from melting from under our feet . Look at earthquakes since beginning 2000 , they have quadrupled in occurences and ten-folded in intensity , all due to the fact that we are draining the oil away from where it is needed most , IN THE ENGINE THAT IS OUR EARTH !

USGS originally reporter it a 5.4 then reduced it back to a 5.2 and then I guess it's back up to a 5.4... and I agree that the .2 is a big difference, considering it's on a log scale

Redman,I have to say that the Petrolia area of the northcoast has more than its fair share of earthquakes.
The Petrolia area also has a LOT of oil drilling going on.
Your theory has merit.
Can you recommend any books on the oil/quake connection?

Running your engine dry , before it blows up , will create stress cracks (fault lines) in the engine block , thus creating the weak spot that will eventually be where the hole will appear once the engine blows ! New fault lines in our earth are now being discovered , wonder why ? Alaska has been depleted of it's oil , that indeed sits above the volcanoes in Alaska . Since , earthquakes have been major and plentiful , volcanoes that have been dormant are now active . I'm no scientist , but then , what one would tell you to run your car engine without oil ????

Also, NEGATORY.

The story broke internationally. The night of the quake, it was the number 2 most viewed story on CNN.com . Here are some links:

Hi Shaken ; They won't allow a book like that ! You can find the info spread out over millions of web pages tho . If you look at where oil reserves have been discovered , you will see all are in and around the major volcanic systems of our Earth . Look at where drilling has and is taking place then overlap a volcanics map over it then an eq map over them , you will be surprised !

Did some guy from NY give North Coast folks a lecture on ... what makes the ground shake?

I've been away 8 years and all of sudden they aren't just earthquakes they're subtle suggestions that we find alternative energy sources....

The earthquakes are measured geometrically.
A 2 is ten times as strong as a 1, a 3 is ten times a 2, and so on.
