Garrett is and was my cousin. For the people that knew him, thank you for your kindness. He was a wonderful sweet man. For those that didn't know him, you know NOTHING. How dare you make assumptions about a person you don't know. NOBODY deserves to die in this manner. There is no excuse, none. Those that are using Garrett for their drug advocacy, for a reason to hammer his family, or just to be plain vicious, STOP. We have enough pain, we don't need you to add more. None of you have a clue as to how many people have been devastated by this horrendous event. And yes, I realize, you don't care. You don't even have all of the facts of the case, and yet you feel free to make judgements. My suggestion is, look into your heart, and ask yourself how you would feel, if this was YOUR family member. Would you want people that know nothing, running down your family member? Just remember, there is no excuse for this senseless crime, which is WHY its called a crime. And think of us, his family, who love him.

A young man's life was taken through violence in his own home. This young man served his country AND all of you have had the benefit of his and others sacrifice to keep you safe while you are in the comfort of your own home.

This young man served his country and sacrificed his own safety to protect the American people. The same people who are making off the cuff remarks about him.

Show some respect and some gratitude for what he did for you as a Sargeant in the National Guard.

Shame on those of you who are jumping to conclusions when the family of this young man doesn't even know what has happened yet.

He was murdered -- not on foreign soil, but in his OWN house by someone who came there with a sole purpose -- to murder Garret.

Rest in peace Garret.

As a community we need to help law enforcement find the person or person,s responsible for this murder of Garrett Benson. There is probably no connection but there was a similar home invasion that occured in Ukiah at about 9:00 am Wednesday. Police should check just to rule any commection out. Please come forward hand help law enforcement if you have any informiation about this murder. My prayers are with Garretts family and friends.

Here is a tip: if you have large amounts of marijuana in your home, don't be telling all your dirtbag friends about it.

A shame he lost his life.
My thoughts are with his family and friends.

I think many feel better that there were drugs involved.
The thought that it could be a random act is frightening, so knowing that this most common of reasons is why the onvasion happened will make them feel more secure that it won't happen to them.

Laura's comments are right on. Garrett was one of the kindest, most gentle persons I have ever known.
He would be one of the first persons to offer his help anyone of the posters on this thread if they were truly in need. Perhaps, some of you can consider this before you judge him or his situation.
He touched many peoples lives and he probably never knew how many.
I was not a close friend of Garrett but I feel compelled to write this because I knew him well enough to say that the wonderful traits mentioned by Laura and many others on this thread are absolutely true.
Nice person? Yeah he probably was. He was also a fool to be growing pot! Still sad though!

We should all remember there is a cause and effect for all our actions. I'm sure if he had the choice to go back in time, his choices would be much different.
This tragdey should be a lesson to us all.
That's what Garrett would want us all to learn from his death.
RIP Gman.
