If he would've plead 3 years to life, the murderer would still do life. Yes he would be eligible for parole in 3 years under those hypothetical circumstances, but the state of ca won't grant parole to murderers. So judge Watson did'nt waste any time and money rehashing a moot point.

WOW! A judge with balls. There's a new concept in the Humboldt County Court system.
Sounds about right

50 years to life sounds about right for murder.

But wait! What about all the other murder victims whose killers usually get around 5 or 6 years in prison?

Is their life worth less because they are not a well-liked drug dealer like Garrett was?

Is the law equal for all? Or is it a case of "different strokes for different folks."?

"a significant amount of marijuana was being grown and processed in the house." Golly gee, do you suppose that had anything to do with it? And it is touching for the Mom, but based on the story there is no mystery what her son would become: he was and would still have been a dope dealer.

Her son being a dope dealer doesn't make his death any less painful for her. Naturally she's going to stress his good qualities when she's speaking at the sentencing of his murderer.

Judge Bruce Watson also rejected the defendant's request to change his plea Friday.

Guss what. I bet Watson gets Judge Watson's ruling over-turned on appeal.

He's getting 50 years because he didn't go to trial and therefore took the bread and butter out of the attorney's mouths. If he pleads not guilty, and wastes the taxpayer's money he gets maybe 10 years max.

Our criminals justice sysem is not about justice or rehabilitation. It's about stuffing the pockets of attorneys with society's financial resources that would be better off going to some better cause. Just look at the crimes that occur over and over again in Humboldt County. There's no deterrent amongst the rampant criminal sector of our society. They just keep the criminal defense and prosecution industries rolling along.

Someone in Eureka can remember the sting that took place this time in 1993. Perhaps 5 different women were arrested for prostitution, and drug charges. One of those women was my 29 yr. old daughter. During that time she was also picked up by 3 men and taken to a deserted beach between Eureka and Arcata, robbed, raped, beaten, they discussed killing her then and there. She disappeared 3 weeks later not to be seen again. Detective Swanson was the Det. on the case at that time. This scares the hell out of me, but it continues to happen, and we all know it does to this day. Any clue will help. If we had money, or were famous, we'd know by now. Please help. I'm begging.

Have you no heart or compassion whatsoever? Where is your humanity. This woman lost HER CHILD, HER SON. And your advice is to "get over it, he was NO SAINT"? She won't ever be able to get over it. Her life will never, ever be the same. And while he was breaking a law, that does not give someone else the right to take his life by force inside his own home. And unlike you I am posting this using my real name, you hard hearted coward.

Growing and processing marijuana is not a crime that comes anywhere close to armed robbery, home invasion, and murder. This psychopath got everything he deserves and hopefully more. I do not know these people, but how dare you insult the Benson family. This is most likely their one and only opportunity to confront this murderer and try to let the healing start to begin.
You're comment truly disgusts me.

Bartenders are the real dope dealers. I thought everyone knew that.

The fire helicoptors ganged up and put out a finger of the Lockheed Fire that was licking at the borders of the Wamm pot farm here in Santa Cruz.
Times are changing so get real...

If Mr Benson serverd drinks I'd say good riddance. I'm sure his Mom is right , he was a good guy,, and I don't smoke pot by the way.
I just know what's right and what's wrong.
