If you completely automate a manufacturing process you can eliminate most of your work force.
The initial cost is high yet you save $$$ in the long run.
You can get Temps to do the mundane jobs that still have to be done and contract out shipping.
All you need is a few very well paid Engineers and Techs (Like me) to keep your plant running smoothly.

Companies who pay well don't have problems filling positions and let's be frank: driving a truck isn't that tough.
Great, glad you feel that way. So why don't you write to your lib representatives and tell them that driving a truck is not that tough. After all, half of our population is on some sort of government support program. Since driving a truck is not all that though, I'm sure we can get at least 20,000 people off of food stamps, Medicaid or welfare by forcing them to get a job.

You know for ten years the CEO and front office people all got 300% worth of raises. In that same ten years the union workers have agreed to two pay and benefit cuts...COUNT THEM TWO CUTS TO PAY AND BENEFITS....ALL WHY FRONT OFFICE GOT 300% WORTH OF RAISES..........Sometimes you have to stand up to tyranny even if it hurts. How many more cuts should the workers have to take why the front office gets raises???????? Would you smile and be happy if your bosses all got raises and made you take pay cuts......COME ON NO YOU WOULD NOT.

I don't know, but maybe they already did think of that. I remember a few times when companies wanted to automate, and the unions threatened the company if they dared to try. Oe that comes to mind was that strike on the west coast by the longshoreman during Bush's years. They wanted to upgrade to barcode scanners and the union objected because it would mean less union employees.

That why most companies who want to build a new plant build it here in the south.
I don't need a union to take care of me and most here feel the same way.
I remember the Electrical union got mad at Newt Gingrich years ago and some members went into his Atlanta office and terrorized his office workers and vandalized his building. I know many people who that was what defined unions and their mentality to them. Gingrich never pressed charges.
I know many contractors who love to bid against union companies because the unions cannot compete with the independent contractors on price so the unions say their quality is better, that's complete BS.
The sooner the unions die out completely, the better for America.

I hear ya, I'm a truck driver, and I can't tell you how many customers we lost because of unions. They either went to a southern state or moved out of the country entirely.

Several years ago our city got an offer from then Ohio Governor Strickland's administration. They said if we could cough up half the money, the state would pitch in the other half for new schools in the city. So they threw it on the ballot a couple of times and if finally passed.

The city took bids from companies to tear down the old schools and put up new ones. The unions sued because since we got half of the money from the state, we either had to use union companies or pay prevailing wage to non-union companies. So it ended up costing us taxpayers a lot more money because of these stupid unions.

Prior to that, I switched insurance companies for my rental properties and home. They told me my last insurance company underinsured me, so I had to purchase a more expensive policy. I asked them what they base their loss cost on? They told me union construction.

Every six months I pay property taxes and every year I pay the premiums for house insurance. So I'm reminded of what unions cost me even though I have nothing to do with them. I'm sure a lot of people don't even know why their home or business insurance is so high.

Blame the union for not taking yet another round of pay cuts while he was giving himself and other execs raises?

What’s it like being a “hater”? Wastes a lot of energy and has no discernible benefits.

Obama keeps the USA war
Obama saved the Bush Tax Cuts
Obama gave Wall Street 16 trillion
Obama wants to take away 3 trillion plus from the 99%
Obama got NAFTA type of trade deal pass , in the middle of a Depression

I got it? you are a comedian

Obviously 300% worth of raises wasn't enough to make it worth being anywhere near people like you.
Hopefully Hostess will somehow start up again and only hire decent non union people.
I enjoyed hostess products and we all know mikey moore enjoyed them too.

Wise up. If the Unions keep driving the cost of living up on all of us and the govt keeps spending and taxing you can be certain your concerns of having a few rich and the rest working to pay then will be a reality. Wise up.

California faces the exact same out come as Hostess. Over promised, unaffordable, unfunded Pension schemes traded for Union campaign support will plunge Los Angeles into Municipal Bankrupcty in three years or less.
Thiry mid size Cities in California have already warned that Muni Bankruptcy is on the horizon as the most expensive per worker pension costs in American history decimate the State's ability to keep it's financial commitments.
Anybody that would debate against the notion that public unions have gotten too powerful and are demanding too much would be a fool. The math proves they have. However, don't confuse the public employees unions with the unions at Hostess. The unions at Hostess actually gave in to some concessions; while the management gave up nothing and reaped more and more compensation and benefits. Of course I wouldn't expect anything less than a conservative blanket blaming unions for all of our woes... as if the facts that management was over-compensated and Twinkies sales are WAY down had nothing whatsoever to do with it. Go ahead... Keep destroying your credibility by running with your hard-line anti-union rhetoric. Most of the world knows the truth about executive compensation... not to mention the vast amount that are aware how unhealthy Twinkies are (were).

I don't know... perhaps we can look at some large corporations where the workers AREN'T represented... like Walmart for example. Their management is doing great, but their workers... another story altogether. Now you can go with the "well, the workers should find another job then" but we all know that it's not that simple. More and more employers (and thus the jobs they offer) are going in the same direction as Walmart because management all over is envious of Walmart's (and companies that operate LIKE Walmart) margin of management salaries, benefits and versus those for line workers and the resulting profitability. If this type of management continues to be supported (or at least condoned on a large scale), it's only a matter of time till it becomes that standard (if it already hasn't). Unions are there to keep a power balance between labor and management.
