Just more proof that one person's actions (the insurance agent) can have a massive effect on the community.

Some of the customer service companies that thought they were still insured were under very high risk. I'll assume the insurance was some form of liability insurance. What if something happened during the "non-insured" moments that required a claim. Things would have gotten messy then. The proprietor of the uninsured company would have had to assume all risks and fault, with no immediate recourse. Little claims could wipe out the smaller companies. Sure, there could be a pending suit against the defrauding insurance agent, but that certainly won't get resolved within a couple years.

I got five or six line items of coverage on my insurance policy. I know it's being paid because he's a direct agent for a company and not an "independent" agent. I receive regular statements that show I'm paid up and still insured. These statements come directly from the parent company. I wonder if the victims in this case had received any mail from the company they were insured through, without delivering through the middleman. I think that's where the risk comes in. Independent agents don't have a fixed affiliation. I'm not too versed in how it all works, but my guess is the agent in this article was independent and as payments go through him, he is supposed to forward them to the appropriate company. You can smell the potential for fraud here.

Insurance is a necessary "racket" if you ask me. The liability is too great without it. I can only try to pick the best value for me. I had my share of independent agents in the past and they're just too confusing to work with, at least from my experience. I eventually settled on the company that my parents used all their life, without issue.
