This entire story is ugly. Starting with bullying and racism, building to more violence, and ending in the senseless death of a (albeit mixed up) teen. It is a litany of bad choices followed by worse choices made by all the parties involved. Everything we do in life involves choice, for which there are consequences. Whether or not Jason Grimmer had consciously realized this when he ran from the fight his crew had instigated, we will never know. Hopefully, the rest of the people involved have realized this, and will stand up and face their own truths and consequences for their choices and their actions.
