A rose might've been a rose to good ol' Willie Shakespeare or Gertrude Stein, but if they'd been confronted with the Estes Park R-3 school board, they might have wondered.

At least they spelled valedictorian correctly. When I got a certificate of recognition from my high school they spelled it wrong on the certificate. Irony.

All the more reason for the smartest kid (GPA-wise) who doesn't get recognized because they aren't the school board's hand picked golden child to skip the graduation "ceremony" altogether.

Before this article, the only controversy I've heard about selecting a valedictorian has been from the "every child is a winner!" types of helicopter parents who didn't want to see their average children's feeling hurt. But the school board coming up with their own "end results" criteria? Preposterous! What the h-e-double-l are "end results", anyway?

that the reason for this insanity by Todd Jirsa and Marie Richardson (Tony "handpuppet" Paglia was absent) is for Todd's son to be named V even though his grades are not up to par. Ends means the school board has certain goals and criteria they want kids to acheive before graduation which are, as you say, preposterous. Seems like the rest of the country upholds the sacred tradition of Valedictorian except Estes Park where school board members kids get a free pass. V is for the highest grade point average...let Dylan get a golf trophy.

Most schools have weighted grades which give students taking more rigorous classes to get higher point values for A's. Ie: an A for advanced Physics would be a 4.5 rather than a 4.0 for basic Science. I think Estes had a system like this in the past. The Idea that the school board would select a valedictorian is preposterous and very political. Most people understand that the valedictorian is the top grade point average in the school and the salutatorian is the second grade point average in the school. Be prepared for ties and honor them. Very few people understand what an "end" is and you look foolish holding on to a system that honors "ends". Get some administrators who have some backbone and let the math do the decision making on valedictorian. The kids all know who it should be. Why are the adults making it so complicated.(and of course if Todd Jirsa's son gets the honor with this system -- it would be very suspect)
