Fate of Rollins Pass Road unclear

I am a life long skier at Winter Park, a bicyclist, a hiker, a teacher, and a person who considers themselves an environmentalist. I have also ridden my mountain bike to the top of Rollins/Corona Pass from both the east and the west sides on numerous occasions and have wondered why it hasn't been reopened to traffic. Why can't the adjacent wilderness areas be protected the same way that is done on the Mt. Evans road and Trail Ridge road, while still allowing jeeps and other vehicles to make it a point to point trip. While I am hesitant to see new development in roadless areas, there is already a road on Rollins Pass, and I think most of the people who would drive it wouldn't ever be tempted to go "off road", especially if there are prohibitions against it.

About 1980 I went up the mountain, across a bridge that was very very scary because it had no side rails. And, through a tunnel on the other side. I had to move rocks in the tunnel to get my car through the tunnel. Down the mountain, past a lake and came out on the east side. It was a trip that I have never done again. On top, most of the path was one land. No way could someone pass in the tunnel or on the bridge that was just a overhang. They drilled holes in the side of the mountain. And placed large rail road ties into the mountain. Yes, I believe it could be opened to bike or walking traffic, but cars, I have my doubts.

I believe that the tunnel caved in 1991 or 92' It was a very scary drive in a vehicle, the bridge is or was a railroad trestle, at the bottom of the cut isa train that was hit by a avalanche.
