The trail across the UNC property was declared a public right of way (ROW) many years ago when they (UNC)attempted to block Elkhorn Stables from crossing the property to access RMNP. It appears that the land was USFS land that was deeded to the State, but the ROW across the land was never abandoned, and the courts ruled that it still belonged to the public.

The "private" owner of Old Man Mountain is the very public University of Northern Colorado. The parcel number indicates the property is tax exempt. All information which was easily found at the Larimer County website:
