There's another chapter about to open: "Hospital razes neighbors houses for parking garage". Watch it happen, slowly, intentionally, surely.

(they already own 3 houses that are EXACTLY where the parking will be. Too bad for the neighbors)

This hospital has missed the boat by trying to sell the curb appeal, the neat rock work, the spiffy art gallery, the embossed animal shaped stucco- and have not concentrated on providing CONSISTENT, GOOD LEADERSHIP to give this community quality care at a reasonable value.

The lobby (and the related excessive decorations) are a slap in the face of reason, and reminds me of little man syndrome (drive big truck if you have a little penis). BUILD BIG LOBBY if you provide QUESTIONABLE CARE?

Get your priorities straight EPMC! I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired of this debacle.

I am sitting here cracking up. Judging by the comments made of "Understand the LAW", I would dare to make a wild guess that this blogger is the arrogant, all-knowing PREVIOUS HR Director/Compliance Officer, Robert Stansel. He blogs the way he communicated with EPMC employees. Nice try, Robert. Enjoying your retirement? Apparently you didn't "Understand the LAW". LOL

What did we expect their press releases to say? "Things are crazy here and the interim CEO is running around with her hair on fire!"?

Naturally they are going to say everything that they hope will put them in a good light. The wording of these press releases is pulled from the world of political scandal containment. Especially the parts about the resignations all being unrelated and the like. Nothing to see here folks, move along now.

What is truly sad is that there are a lot of decent folks who work there that will get tarred with the same brush as the guilty people.

Go back 30 years and look at what was going on at the hospital. A new skilled nursing facility was being built. And who did the illustrious folks on the hospital board hire to do the construction? Companies from such places like Broken Bow, Nebraska. That is what you get when you look for the lowest bidder. And what did we get for our money? Roofs that leaked during our daily summer thunderstorms. Fire doors that malfunctioned at the most inopportune moments( old ladies getting hit by heavy doors as they tried to wheel themselves down the hall way.)

While there was no guarantee that the work would have been flawless by hiring local sub-contractors, at least they would have been IN TOWN and not out in the badlands of Nebraska.

So your local medical facility has an interesting history to say the least. Who will wear the mantle of shame after the dust settles on this latest scandal? Probably someone that the board feels is disposable. They could always consult the school board that fiddled while Rome burned in the form of the Smith - Kastendieck - DeLeo debacles, as to how to properly assign blame.

Better yet. How about every last one of these public entities taking a look at themselves and ridding their ranks of people not dedicated to providing the product and service they were hired to do.

I work at EPMC and I live in this tax district. I am proud of the care we offer this community and I am proud of the nurses and Med/Surg Staff I work with!!! There are two sides to every story and no one has heard the side of the "nurse" therefore, no one has the right to be throwing stones!!! I have worked with "that" nurse and she is a fine example of a great nurse, Kathleen you said it well!!!

than an addicted nurse. Certainly knows all the ins and outs and side effects of the medication she is dispensing or keeping from the patients to feed her habit. Seriously? You are attempting to endorse someone who was found passed out from ODing on medications she stole?

Karen:Throwing "stones" or offering fair opinion?
The EPMC should have introspection on occasion even if all is well.
If all is well then EPMC should welcome open forum; if not, then they would have a strong reaction.....like now. Firing's , backlash, inside honor support. Cover-ups?
We'll see where the criminal investigation leads this community's opinion of EPMC.
For now, it is the opinion of this citizen that EPMC is a unpredictable money trap, and one would be well advised to seek all medical help elsewhere.

Where was this department leader while this was going on? There were signs that something was going on but ignored. The lack of leadership is appaling.

Glad to hear it's the talk of the town. It seemed no one cared. I thought the same thing, Understand the Law sounds like the former HR Director. They definitely need to clean house at EPMC. 2011Robert Stansel needed to go. He is a disaster. But so do several other people. They most especialy need to clean house at the Skilled Nursing Facility. The admin there has taken it from a wonderful home for the local people and their families to a place with no heart. They have lost too many good employees because of the whims of the Admin..And many who remain are fearful of their jobs. If only you all really knew!

Colorado regulations require directors of pharmacy to report losses of controlled substances to local police, The State Board of Pharmacy and the DEA. EPMC controlled substance policy states that any losses or theft must be reported to the pharmacy director immediately. It also states that losses must be reported to law enforcement by the director of pharmacy, not HR or hospital attorney. On March 11th 2013 ED director M.E. found 5 meperidine syringes on nurse L.B after she fainted. The EPMC controlled substance policy was never followed; M.E. never informed the pharmacy director or local police. The EPMC pharmacy was made aware of the narcotic issue after a billing staff member questioned a narcotic charge for a patient that was not in the hospital on the day the narcotic was taken for that patient. At that point pharmacy ran complete narcotic reports and realized the large scale of the narcotic theft. L.B. was concealing her narcotic theft by writing fraudulent physician order making it hard to detect. Four occurrence reports were written by the pharmacy (from 11/27/12 thru 3/11/13) and given to L.B.’s mangers M.E. and P.K.. No action was taken on any of these reports by these managers perpetuating the addiction as well as allowing an impaired worker to perform patient care. The pharmacy director was warned on 11/27/12 by P.K. that confronting L.B. about these narcotic issues could be considered “Lateral Workplace Hostility”.
Robert Stansel was not a licenssed attorney in Colorado and is not part of the hospital legal counsel. Any licensed healthcare professional following his advice placed thier own license at risk. Please know the law when commenting on this issue.

HIPPA regulations do not apply to criminal acts. All reports to local police, The state board of pharmacy and the DEA are public documents. The names of all parties involved are open for public access. Please know the law when commenting on this issue.

The plot thickens, another 'resignation' of a VP. When will the madness end? There have been department heads, lowly worker bees and CEO's resign or be encouraged out the door... It would seem that the Board is the only constant, and the constant attitude seems to be "CHANGE". C'mon BOARD! Get your shit together and make some decisions that are positive for this facility and community. Sell your care and skills, not the assertion that "WE LOWERED OUR PRICES". Are you kidding? A mass mailing to say 'we've been overcharging you, and we admit it, Will you come back?' Who thought of that ridiculous campaign?

It is a shame that we, the residents of Estes, voted in the expansion of EPMC, only to have it turn from a reasonable, modest place for medical care into a facility where you can lose your shirt to exorbitant, unexpected costs.
As we hear from more and more insiders we glean bureaucratic greed and avarice for power over any earnest desire for community good.
Unfortunate for all. Perhaps a dose of justice will instill the auguries of wisdom.

Thank you, FYI. I knew Robert Stansel was at least not licensed in CO. I was told he did not pass the BAR.I did not know if it was true.It was my belief that Dana was telling the truth. He has an important license to protect.I have also heard complaints that while the Hosp. may have decreased some prices, they increased others.I have tried to remain loyal but, it is becoming more difficult! I hope everyone is not forgetting that the Skilled Nursing Facility is also in dire need of intelligent, decent, caring Admin..which they sorely lack! I do not know Bobbi, but, I sincerely hope she does the right thing.

As a person not connected to Estes Park Hospital, but who depends on the hospital, I hope all of this is cleaned up quick and fast. I get the feeling the hospital tried to cover up a crime to protect the nurse and the hospital's reputation. I feel sorry for the nurse, but you can't steal drugs anymore than a bank clerk can steal money. She/He needs help and the community needs justice. --- When the Director of Pharmacy reported the theft, he was fired. I assume he will sue and the hospital will lose both it's reputation and lots of money. Bring an outsider in to clean up the hospital and settle out of court with the pharmacist. Estes needs a well run and honest hospital to serve the local people and visitors to the Rocky Mountains.

I know Dana and he is a man of integrity-I hope he sues the heck out of that place, not only because he was wrongfully fired, but I'm sorry-that place deserves it. The "leadership" there for the past 5 years have tormented their employees and pushed the ones they didnt like or who didnt kiss their butts out. I was there for 3 years and saw so many good people leave who had been there for 15+ years! I don't know Bobbi Swenson but I still have plenty of friends who work there and say she is awful and needs to go. If the Board hires her as the CEO-there will be more resignations. Everything EPMC reports to the news are lies-Bobbi Swenson says that the HR Director left for other opportunities...HAHAHA! Bobbi you are an idiot if you think we believe you. Robert got scared-so he tucked his tail between his legs and bolted. Call it what it is. Hopefully she is the next to go. If she gets the CEO position, I will boycott EPMC. Hang in there good people of EPMC-hopefully the BOARD will wake up and do the right thing.

Estes Native you are so right. There are so many good people gone from EPMC and PPLC because of poor leadership starting from the Board down. The Board is weak and blind.I hope the people of Estes Park really question what is going on over there.I would believe Dana any day over any administrator. Why isn't the Trail Gazette following up on any of this? The antics at EPMC need to stay in the forefront.
