Friends of the Rocky meet
The performing arts center proposed for Estes Park has some friends. FOR was the result of TeresaMaria Widawksi's desire to help Estes Performance Incorporated's cause of bringing a state-of-the art performing arts center to Estes Park.

There is nothing like a free venue to get out the crowd. What were there, 16 people in attendance to pump each other up on the 2013 trustee ram?

The parking issue is a scapegoat for the well-deserved NO answer to a bad idea.
A theater shoe-horned into our tight downtown? The whole EPIC/FOR/Arts 'community' seems to be trapped in a corner and willing to fight for their lives like a rat, and we all know a rat can convince even a much larger, stronger being that it may cause great harm if the rat is not allowed to pass.... Just like this theater idea, and the way the supporters are acting.
'For the Arts' is like saying 'For the Kids', or in government terms 'For Public Safety'. Emotional words that breed sympathy in a poorly informed audience... That this project hasn't made it very far off the starting line with fundraising makes me wonder where all of the blathering about how great this is for our community is coming from?
I am pleased that the Trustees are speaking up for the community, and not yielding to the desperate rats that may be trying to save face, rather than make a good decision for the project, and ultimately the community.
I think they should run away from that stinky land 'donation' and reconsider the fairgrounds location (or Elkhorn Lodge?). With that move, I will back down from my defensive position, although I can't see sending any money in for a losing battle.
EPIC and FOR, At what point do you say 'I guess this isn't right for this community'? Based on the poor response to this project in so many different forms and approaches over so many years, I'd suggest the time has passed.

Parking is a big issue in Estes Park. Living near downtown and walking there daily, I observe this firsthand. Business owners and employees do take up many of the prime spaces. I've felt for a long time that the town needs to address this. This is a good issue for the new Transportation Advisory Committee to address. But a Performing Arts Center downtown (Breckenridge has one and it has been a boom to the downtown area) is a win/win for all. Nighttime parking is not the crunch as daytime in the busy season, and nighttime is when the PAC would be most utilized. In the winter, the downtown is a tomb after 5pm. Having a draw for people downtown in the winter would be a boon to businesses there and give more folks more reasons to come to EP from elsewhere in the off-season. I attended 2 of the EPIC public hearings, and the same 2 people (no others)spoke against this plan at both hearings. If we want Estes Park to be a well-rounded, self-sustaining community and not just a resort town, this plan is a step in the right direction.

There are only two people that oppose this monstrosity. Continue to repeat this mantra and eventually you can convince yourself it might be true. Or you will reach a state of cognitive dissonance. Welcome to Orwell's 1984. If you are so confident of your numbers, why don't you draw up a list of registered voters within the town limits who support or oppose this grenade lobbed into the heart of downtown? I'm sure a majority of people living in Colorado support, IN THE ABSTRACT, the idea of cultural events and performing arts. But I'm not sure how many of them support it when it is presented as what it really is, with the likelihood that, at this particular location, of this particular size, it will likely ruin other businesses that have been here a lot longer, or greatly alters the over-100-year appearance of what people have become comfortable with in the downtown area, blocking out the sun from its neighbors. I can't wait to see the response when these two people go away, how Elk Horn will turn into skyscrapers and paid parking decks as everyone tries to outcompete each other. Welcome to Hell.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Put The Rocky to a public vote of the residents of Estes Park. The we will know if it is wanted or not. Of course, if it were to be defeated, we could count on Dr. Bergland to cry foul and try to have the people who voted against it removed from Estes Park.

Money has been transferred to assure necessary votes.

Who needs 'quaintness' when one can have an eight hundred pound 'BLIVIT' downtown ?
This is also starting to smell like the justification for an adjacent multi level parking area. Forget self parking when you can have, valets to accomodate and manage use of it for the theatre going crowd during performance times...'whoa, now we got real class and mo' income too.....'.

Teresa Widakski states that there is a deep desire for The Performing Arts in this community. A deep desire by who? All you ever here is an eronious number reported by somebody who claims their friends want it. It's been said over and over by different people who have taken the time to comment that a public vote be taken, but it always seems to fall on deaf ears. Maybe I should atend the Feb. 26 meeting and suggest to the town trustees that they hold off on any further decisions until a public vote is taken, then go on from there.

Does it seem like we have an instance of putting the cart before the horse, writ large?
Has the local planning commission given approval to this? Have the Town planning staff given their suggestion and potential alterations that accompany most projects of this magnitude?
We hear nothing about any of this. Jack M. phrased something very well. Stinky land "donation". That whole plan has many people scratching their heads.
Again, what is wrong with a theater at the fairgrounds complex? Is it because their will be no opportunity for someone to get their donation amount back as an annuity? Why in the name of everything holy do you want to shoehorn a huge building into that space downtown? The business model they want to try claims that retail and food concessions will help fund the operations. When the old mall was at less than 100% occupancy in its final years and we have had 3 summer seasons with those retail spaces taken out of circulation, is it really needed to add more storefronts into the mix?
Only a Polyanna plans a project like this without taking a serious look at the downside. All of the positive spin and daily affirmations in the world won't make a poorly thought out plan work.
As has been mentioned before and it bears repeating: Are the operators of the Rocky going to come to the Town(taxpayers)in a few years after it opens asking for money because "revenues aren't keeping up with expenses"? And if that would be the case, will they open their books to show that the "donors" of the land will not be getting taxpayer money because of whatever arrangements have been made to pull off this "donation"?
Generally speaking, most people in Estes think a community theater/performing arts complex is a good idea. The town offered a space at the fairgrounds where we now have a large paved parking area. They offered an operating subsidy. So what about that could they find objectionable? As the saying goes, "Follow the money." Or in this case the lack of money.
Would hate to see it come to this, but the right of eminent domain could conceivably be used in a case where a government entity views a property as a blight. How many legitimate offers have been made and turned down in the last 2 years on this property?
The four trustees who turned thumbs down on giving town property away may end up looking like the smartest people in the room.
