For all of you thin-skinned pretentious business people in Estes Park - does the First Amendment mean anything to you? Wendy Koenig has the right as an American to make her point and the fact that you are appalled or offended by her remarks merely says to me that you are a bunch of phonies. Are any of you willing to step up and defend her rights or is it money all that you care about?

It seems we cannot tell the truth anymore in America. People don't want to hear it. Wendy told the obvious and absolute truth. We do have these problems at our schools and especially in the housing here because of illegals....period.. Mr. Dickey is obviously a pussy who just wants to get elected regardless of the truth.

She's right, plain and simple, sorry to those offended, but on epoint, how many of the migrant workers are here legally? That's the bottom line, the answer is , most aren't.
If one is here legally, then I don't have aproblem with anyone living and working here, but if not, then they are leeching off our economy, low rent housing, free mediacal care, getting paid and sending most of the money south.
Penalize the busines owners who knowingly hire these people.
This country is getting so PC you can't even speak the truth anymore.

Deal with the facts. There are reasonable points made on both sides of the debate, if local business owners cant find local help, they must do what they have to do. There are too many hand outs these days, kids no longer are forced to get a job and learn a work ethic at a young age.

That said, if affordable housing was not filled by folks here illegally, there are plenty of folks who are here legally that could move into the area and would be happy to get work. Advertising for help wanted could then be expanded into the Metro areas with new families moving to the area, building long term on a community and grasping and making new opportunities.... how functional communities grow.

Because someone doesn't want to hear Facts stated as such, is why we are in the mess we are now. I find it refreshing to hear Wendy state something others are not willing to just to get elected. I hear nothing "racist" in Wendy's remarks and at face value don't believe they were intended that way. That is simply a political slam used far too often these days, it only weakens the term used in a context where it is real. I don't know Wendy but now I am interested in learning more about someone who is willing to state the obvious.

Wendy tells it like it is, plain and simple. Charlie Dickey seems to have a problem facing reality, and should take his business elsewhere. Wendy made a statement of the facts as she sees them, and that is free speech no matter. You business owners that complain are the ones that want the town and others to correct your inadequacies and can't take it upon yourselves to correct. It's always somebody else. Right Diane Muno?

The "REALITY" of Estes Park is it is a beautiful town in a beautiful setting that relies on TOURISM and FEDERAL LANDS far too much for its existence. The population has aged considerably and available youth is in town to visit their grandparents - not to work. I can't help but notice that only one post claims to be from EP, including mine. I live across the divide In Grand County and understand the challenges mountain living brings.
This forum is famous for its flaming of stories, not the intellect of contributors. Although I'll probably catch hell for it, I think someone should stand up for Charley Dickey and his contributions to EP that date back long before he finally moved there. I wonder how many residents have actually climbed Longs Peak or taken advantage of the natural wonders that support the town. Charley has climbed all the 14ers multiple times and Longs more than a dozen. I call it "The 8 mile Aisle" He calls it "Church".
Charley is not a "transplant" to Estes, he and his wife are hard working and nationally recognized business owners who CHOSE to build their businesses in a town that historically only supports "seasonal work". Finding a way to turn a seasonal economy into a thriving community where families stay and thrive is an admirable goal - even tho it isn't the current reality of EP, it is the current problem with EP.
If I lived in EP, I would want a Board of Trustees that the future of the town could be entrusted to. If EP doesn't elect forward thinking, experienced entrepreneurs to their Board of Trustees, EP WILL continue to deteriorate and ultimately be absorbed by the Feds as an addition to RMNP.

Problems:
Parents have kids and let day cares and school districts raise them. Parent teacher conferences are where parents tell teachers they are doing a poor job raising their kids.
Parents want to be friends with their kids - probably don't even know how to raise them since they were latch key kids themselves. They give their little tirants anything to appease them.
Kids don't want to leave home because they can take advantage of mom and dads $ and health care until age 26.
Why work? Drink, smoke, vandize a few things.
European student summer workers came to experience America and earn $ for college. The dollar is worthless currency internationally so why come.
Employers want to pay the lowest salary possible to get their "grunt labor", provide no benefits and gripe when the ones they do reel in wise up to the game and disappear into the night.
Those from over our "southern border" come in droves. Multiple families stuff themselves into your affordable housing, work those jobs no self-respecting high school or college student would do and send all the $ back to family back home. The "Robin Hood" theory - take from the rich and give to themselves (oops, the poor.) If they are really lucky, they can bear a child here and get citizenship.
Other countries require you to speak English and have enough money to live and tickets to return from whence you came. Employers who hire you, are responsible for you and are REQUIRED to report to the authorities if you disappear in the night. Why pay attention to how other countries do things - we are the greatest country in the world so we obviously have all the answers.
If I were still a resident of Estes Park, I would vote for Wendy Koenig - someone who really gets it.

You state that your post comes from EP. Really? Why does it say Denver? The post address is not indicative where the post comes from. It is an IP address that you most likely picked when you opened your account, or where you are posting from. IE--Denver, EP, Timbuctwo, etc.

My post says I live on the other side of the divide in Grand County. When I opened my topix account I entered my zip code - 80478 - Tabernash. When the post went live it said Denver, probably because CenturyLink is my ISP. I have never said I live in EP - read all the words before you start "D Typing"...

Charles Dickey is playing the race card, plain and simple, with his faux outrage. It is well known that businesses, especially in the building and landscape trades, are packed with non-English speaking immigrants, mostly Mexican, of suspect legal status. Heck - you almost need to speak Spanish as a second language to work in any kitchen around town. The Romanians and east Europeans are usually brought in to be clerks and waiters.

But, Dickey is correct that local businesses don't go to Mexico the find workers - they merely had to wait for unpapered immigrants to show up from Greeley and Evans!

I think Dickey should spend a week with the border patrol, worm his way through some tunnels to millions of dollars of mj and cocaine, heroine and meth. Oh yes, these Mexicans are doing a great service to our country. While you are at the border Chuck check out the millions upon millions of dollars we the legal taxpayers spend on security, technology, training the patrol and dogs, equipment, holding cells, legal fees, helicopters, trucks, vans, horses, etc. then if when the lawbreakers get here there are free food, medical, schools, housing waiting for them. My ancestors would have never degraded the America I used to know. They came over legally and worked for the betterment of the USA.

The race card is getting old and folks are hep to the jive of that outdated crap.

How misinformed we all are - Wendy is speaking of legal US residents and legal visitors not illegal immigrants. "Now close you eyes and image that child was white". There are 1st amendment rights and there are human rights folks. These are her comments - not mine. I was asked my opinion and gave it using the same rights that she had voicing hers. I disagree with her comments but only that not. She has been a good trustee for 4 years.

were never opened. Nice sentiments but it is symbolism over substance. No backtracking now Chuck. Once you opened your mouth you lost all credibility with most of this community. Now you close your eyes and imagine a woman being a trustee and she's white.
