The score? Citizens—2, School Board—0..
Estacada School District Superintendent Howard Fetz loves baseball. He played at Eastern Oregon State College and coached there for several years. He is the originator and CEO of a national organization called Americas Game. He loves baseball.
Wednesday night, February 12th was a disaster for the Estacada School Board Team, coached by Fetz. The first inning was opened with four fast balls resulting in a foul tip and three strikes.“Yer out”, the umpire shouted. The inning ended with three up and three down. Fetz’s poor coaching of Chairman Bugni was obvious. He forgot his PA microphone was on and his misguided advice was publicly broadcast. The subject was the abuse of Executive Session privileges.
Another disastrous inning for the Board occurred when the Local School Committees were the subject. The Board, again misguided and gullible, voted unanimously to eliminate the Three Lynx and Eagle Creek Local School Committees. Wrong! Oregon law says that a public vote is required to eliminate those elected committees.“Yer out!”
Same results when the Board voted, again unanimously, to approve the employment contract with the Classified Employees’ Union. The rank and file union members had not voted to accept the contract as presented. Triple play on that one.“Yer Out!”
A total wipe-out occurred when the Board voted to reject the Service Contract with the Clackamas Education Service District (ESD). The contract offered numerous opportunities to score, especially with the families of Special Education students. Following an hour’s presentation of the benefits offered by the ESD, the Board on a motion by D. Scott, voted to not accept the Service Contract. A line-drive to the first baseman—two steps to the bag.“Yer Out!”
The Citizens scored twice. The first tally, a home run by D. Morgan when she identified the elected members of the Three Lynx Local School Committee. Who else than Howard Fetz, Don McKendry and Ruth McKendry. Whoa! Wait a minute! Howard and Don are school district employees living in the district’s buildings at Three Lynx. They were elected by write-in votes, obviously cast by themselves and for each other. Home run by Morgan! Citizens 1, Board 0.
The final score came on M. Luedtke’s squeeze play in the final inning. The annual audit of the District is traditionally presented at the December Board Meeting. To date—not a word. When the Board Chairman was questioned, member Danny Scott came to the rescue with a shouted comment,“We don’t answer questions here.” Error on the Short Stop. Run scored by the Citizens. Citizens 2, Board 0. The audit will be publicly presented at the next Board meeting. Citizens are encouraged to attend this one.
