Sounds like some FINE candidates, so good job search firm!
TOO BAD THE SCHOOL BOARD BLEW IT by going for, then reneging on Tommy Lewis. Now, that was the RIGHT decision to make, actually, which is surprising for the CCSD school board! But making your decisions based on PUBLIC OUTCRY shows that you made the wrong choices in your thinking to begin w/!
Why not -- INSTEAD OF COSTING THE DISTRICT ANOTHER $30K or so for a brand new search -- just re-evaluate the candidates this search firm put forth, and hire one of them!
No -- that would be TOO SIMPLE, TOO LOGICAL -- and of course, Randy & gal pal surrogate board member Rozana will MAKE SURE all future legit candidates are weeded out, so Baby Brother BY MANNING can continue to rule the roost and SHOW HIS CONTINUED CONTEMPT for the NEA folks in "good faith" negotiations!
LOL!

THank Heavens he was NOT selected. As parent of when he was principal at Nataani Nez and as a director currently of Bilingual Ed., I am so very glad he was not considered. Taught about showing how Navajo language plays no real part in helping the students do better. Most, if not all of them don't even speak Navajo, much less want to learn it.

Hey, "notalotofharmony",

I like your thinking and your postings. I bet if you and I were to talk, we'd have the dirt on the rats who lead this district, huh? I like what you have to write and KEEP IT COMING. We need to wake up these people who don't have a clue and seem to CARELESS!

I don't know why Randy is so intent on "national searches" as there are qualified leaders in CCSD who could successfully do the job.

I agree with whoa! How rude flying rock! If this was a teacher, they might have actually been on a break or maybe even at lunch. Or did the management take away teacher lunches too, and chain teachers all to their desks?

If breaks last longer than 1 hour and at different times during the day.

I'm not a teacher, but I played one on TV!
We're all lifelong learners, however. FOR EXAMPLE, I've learned that with the exception of Hoskie Benally and Elayne Lowe, the lone bilagaana on the board, Randy Manning, has effectively conspired with Rozana "Clah" Lopez Manning (and sometimes the worthless Newcomb school board member as well) to ensure that a PROGRESSIVE, FORWARD-THINKING Super will NOT be hired! In this case, the two Navajos and the non-Navajo on the board are working "harmoniously" together: to ensure that a good superintendent will NOT BE HIRED, so that little Brother By can continue as de-facto supe, and so the MORALE of all the good CCSD folks -- students, parents, TEACHERS, friends, supporters, alumni -- will CONTINUE TO DEFLATE ON A DAILY BASIS.
That is, UNLESS THEY SUPPORT THE MANNINGS, in which case, the WORLD IS THEIR OYSTER!
So folks, or in the case of Manning supporters, you troubled miscreants, it all comes down to ONE THING:
Do you support the Mannings running the show, OR NOT?
Because if you do, the great spirit have mercy on your soul, b/c you and those sharing that misguided view are holding the students back from achieving their potential, and their dreams!
Those of you who HAVE A BRAIN AND OPPOSE THE MANNINGS, great! I share that view -- what revelation! In which case, the thing now is, what plan to proceed? Split the district? That's probably the best bet, if and only b/c the Mannings will NEVER ALLOW a forward-thinking super to be hired! So unfortunately, giving away Kirtland to them may be the only option.
BUT, if Kirtland is given up to them following a split, there are always ways to correct that problem: Vote them out! Or hire someone with backbone who will terminate.

I've sort of come in half way through a movie and can't decide if this is a comedy or dramactic tragedy? Anway, I am a Dine' mother of three children. My children went to school in Kirtland. Gangs are bad there and most of the joiners and trouble-makers were 100 percent pure NAVAJO. The onslaught of gangs in our schools is awful. I went to a school board meeting to voice my concerns and to show support of Dr. Bessett. I didn't always agree with her, but I respected her and she did make many good decisions. In getting to know Dr. Bessett, I got to know Randy Manning on a professional level and as one who I've always seen cares alot about the district. My child wanted to read a letter he wrote ON HIS OWN in support of Dr. Bessett and he made it a point to go talk to him and introduced him to some other people from the CCSDistrict. Great impression on a 6th grader. I will always be thankful for Randy Manning in being kind and professional and respect to a young Navajo boy who had a good friend in Dr. Linda Bessett. I don't know all the details of this mess, but I do believe from my own personal experience, that Randy Manning is a good person, same for Bessett. And same goes for many, many good teachers and office help in the district. Also, I am a educated Navajo, with a BA and doing MA course work, I've gotten five calls from HR and Mrs. Frazzini offering me jobs, so I don't know where the accusation of HR being racist comes in. I decided to focus on graduate school full-time and declined the offers, but I do hope to return to give back in the Kirtland area. Thank you.

You are correct about the problems we have, not only in Kirtland, but District wide. And yes, despite what others may say, Randy Manning is a decent and kind human being. I might not like him, or I might disagree with him at times, but he does have my respect as well as my support as he was voted in by the people. I also hope you are able to return to Kirtland as we need educators such as yourself (and my spouse) to help our children as much as possible.

Kirtland Parent in Santa Fe, or District Parent in Santa Fe -- I know you're one and the same: You must not have seen the way Randy Manning attacked the KCHS valedictorian candidates this past late spring, before graduation, WHO DARED TO CHALLENGE DANDY KING RANDY on the dubious and conflicting nature of school board policy versus KCHS student handbook policy where it concerned a cohesive overall CCSD policy toward selecting valedictorians.
DANDY RANDY more or less chastized these FINE YOUNG MEN for speaking out, exactly the WRONG THING TO DO WHEN THE YOUNG ARE LEARNING TO STAND UP FOR WHAT'S RIGHT.
Randy, as school board prez most of his 14 years, had ALL THAT TIME to change this valedictorian policy problem. INSTEAD, it seems to RESURFACE EVERY YEAR, as does the problem of a DEFINITIVE POLICY as to who gets to walk across the stage at graduation!
Dr. Besett and DANDY RANDY stood around, basically watching these students sob before them, or see their shoulders sag (in the case of the val candidates chastized by Dandy Randy)-- doing NOTHING FOR YEARS AND YEARS.
Gee, Dandy Randy, doing nothing to improve these two critical district policies affecting kids at graduation, yet saying he runs for school board FOR THE KIDS! Are you freakin' kiddin' me? SOMEONE WHO LIES SO can justify it all to his maker upon death (if he believes he has a soul).
Kirtland Parent, forgot to say: Hi, Dr. Besett!!! That's who you are! Maybe you and Rozana, who did not like each other too well, can trade Randy lovefest stories! Then go camping and sing "kuum bay yah!"
Randy is decent and kind to kids and adults alike, if you share his religious preference!
VOTE OUT RANDY MANNING AND REPLACE HIM WITH A KIRTLAND-AREA NAVAJO in FEBRUARY 2009!!!!

Believe what you want to believe, I really do not care. I live and work in Kirtland, and have lived here all my life. I can't hear what you are saying through all your yelling. You are only using these Forums to further your own agenda, which by the way, is only founded on your hatred. If you hate it so much here, please, go live elsewhere. And the only reason you care so much about the Valedictorian issue is that you must be related to one of the two boys who did go to the school board, never minding that the young lady who was also Co-Valedictorian also deserved the honor.

Cosmic,
Sometimes extreme times call for extreme measures (but define your take on "extreme" please), so that those inflicting continued chaos can be removed from the power they hold over others. All the defining movements that made this country great, like freeing the slaves, involved what at the time was considered "extreme": A war between the states, was extreme to those who were lucky enough to live through it; passage of the Civil Right Act and an end to Jim Crow laws was considered "extreme" by many, etc.
For those who think they must keep Randy Manning empowered, go for it! But if you do support him, don't tout yourself as a Christian, b/c it's non-Christian to support someone who made their career and life about supporting human conflict (in this case, racial conflict).
Cosmic, the point is opening some eyes to the truth, "extreme" or not .. not gaining yours or anyone's support. I'm not running for office like Randy.

Nope, not related to any of the three valedictorian candidates, but WOULD BE PROUD TO BE A RELATIVE since they stood up to Manning, by standing up for WHAT WAS RIGHT!
Even though he shot them down with his response, it is my hope that if and when they leave Kirtland, and move into a MORE ENLIGHTENED SETTING (there are such places, by the way!), such as the university or college of their choosing, they will also learn that there are those good, just and intelligent people who wish for young folks to become involved in important matters that affect them! And that most places of HIGHER learning are stewarded by those who care about young adults and their well beings as they achieve great things in life, rather than self-centered maniacal folks who play footsy-wootsy and texty-wexty with fellow board members during important board meetings (kind of disrespecting the board prez, isn't it?!)

It disturbs me how one person can create such hostility on these Forums. I have been watching these over the past few days, and finally decided to speak out. Notalotofharmony depicts the turmoil that must be going on in her life and lashes out at those around her. She seems to be especially against District Parent and Kirtland Parent for merely stating views and honest opinions. Just because they do not agree with her, doesn't mean they can't speak their mind. We are still in America - right?

I am proud to say that I am of Cherokee descent, and have honestly, never felt the hostility that notalotofharmony has said exists in our community. I live in Kirtland with my family, and sure, we have our problems, but so does every other place I have lived.

And please, do not disrespect me by saying I am related to the Manning boys or that I am Dr. Besset; I am neither. I just feel that Dr. Lewis was not the answer, and that our School Board really needs to hire someone that can fill both shoes for all of our children. Bill Noland - anyone?

May I please ask what you are referring to when you say Randy Manning did something to the valedictorian(s)?
Also, I am not a member of the LDS church and Mr. Manning has always exhibited professionalism and kindness to my son, me and my spouse. We are all Navajo and so, could you please provide more details on the alleged acts Mr. Manning did to students at KCHS?
I'm curious and don't mean to perpetuate or add salt to wounds. Thank you.

Ms. Lee -

As far as I can tell, Notalotofharmony just does not like the Mannings, LDS People, or anyone who disagrees. I agree with you, Mr. Manning has always been polite and courteous.
