Good Going Hoorah I am happy to hear someone give productive advice here. Although the Marine Corps is a serious institution we however are not heartless and depending upon past records of the 2 Devil Pups will be fair in dishing out the punishment or corrective training that is warranted. This is a point in the lives of the 2 young marines that is critical to thier futures. Encourage them to make the right choice. The poster is correct they can turn themselves into any military installation or authority and will be treated fairly at this point after the 30 or 31st day they have compounded the crime as per UCMJ and have become deserters.

Although, I disagree with what the two did, I believe there has been enough of the bashing, I think the two young Marines have/will learn(ed) a valuable lesson, yes they will be rightfully punished when they turn themselves in or are caught, which ever comes first, but I think all the comments should be directed towards the two families. The familly members should be encouraging the two to turn themselves in before the 30 day point as stated previously, after this time, it becomes desertion and much harsher penalties. So my comment is to Heather McMahon...convince your sister to turn herself into the nearest military installation, they will be much easier on her in the long-run if she does.
Good luck to the young couple.

Here's what will happen. They will return from UA status and be placed in the brig. They will almost certainly enter a pretrial agreement capping potential confinement at 30 days if they receive a BCD (bad conduct discharge)... which is very likely. This is a minor offense so it will be handled at the special court-martial level. A Marine can only receive a dishonorable discharge at a general court-martial. Those are reserved for very serious offenses.
Also, there is no time delineation for desertion (e.g., over 30 days absent equals desertion). The prosecution would have to prove that these two never intended to return. That is difficult, and in most cases, more trouble than it is worth.
Finally, the birg, contrary to the perceptions on this blog, is not that bad. It is a much better place to spend time than a civilian jail or prison. There are no sexual assaults or harsh living conditions. Unless the individual is a special concern, he or she will live in a squadbay-type holding room, not an individual cell.
This is a "big deal" only because of the media coverage. For the prosecutor and defense counsel this will be a very routine case to handle.
CORRECT!!!

You go AWOL for a YEAR during wartime, that's desertion and it carries the death penalty under the UCMJ.

No, you're wrong. Different rules for Guardsman, if he wasn't activated by tittle 10, then there can be no desertion.

I don't understand, these two were married? I thought all Marines were homosexual. Why would they get married? Was one of them a post-op? That would explain it!

If you are going to join the military it is no secret how tough the Marines are. There are no doubts that this is the most difficult and potentially rewarding, branch of military service. Service is key here, you enlist to serve. If you have issues or "stress" you talk to someone. Going on holiday is inexcusable and an insult to all of the men and women in every branch of service. There are no excuses. A public apology is only a beginning, the pair have to be held accountable. This may be harsh and it is but there are consequences for our actions.
YEP!!! TOTALLY AGREE!!
