I find it interesting that taxes are off as much as the newspaper stated I find it personal disturping that we have tax rate hike every year and we have people in office that dont know the law.I think this should be looked at deeply.

Same here, We are lucky to have a citizen such as John Day. He has the guts to research and hold the office holder accountable. Thanks John.

Well -well - the county Mayor admitted that he just "forgot" and did not address his Greenbelt property tax issue in a timely manner. But I do admire him to say that he will make his taxes right - including paying the back taxes. Now - let us all just follow this and see him presenting a personal check to Ms. Bennett for the 3 years of back taxes he owes (& making sure that $$ gets into the county coffers). This I am waiting and would be remiss in not making sure he & Ms. Bennett meet their commitment to Unicoi county and their constituents,(you know the ones [us] who entrusted them with running the government of Unicoi County in an HONEST and efficient manner!

I feel this should be addressed and all property on greenbelt should have to conform I wonder how many are on it and should not be or have not done what is suppose to be done to conform. This should raise concern to all citizens this cost us all alot of money with all the tax hikes over past 5 years is someone not doing there job, and how does the mayor and lawyer serious if they dont know the law. We need a change in the court house for sure.

The local tax assessors are scamming the public with this "handbook" that 'requires' a forest management plan if your property is forest area.
The LAW states: "if the local assessor can not determine the status of the property ( such as being forest ), then the local assessor may request the aid of the State forester in making this determination".
It doesn't say ANYTHING about the owner having to come up with a 'management plan'. That was something someone in the State Comptroller's office cooked up and put in this 'handbook' they sent out to the local assessors.
Works out GREAT for the "good ole boy" network, as they hand you the name of a retired State forester, say "he charges $xxx to write you up a plan".( A plan that doesn't mean jack...you can do whatever you want in the way of your property, plan or not )...this is merely fee grabbing at it's best.
The 'handbook' is NOT the law.
I challenged my local assessor (not Unicoi Co ) on this issue, read him the law, and did not give him a 'management plan'. My property is in FOREST greenbelt.

A local property assessor's lack of backbone to follow state requirements isn't very convincing as to the requirements' validity. Perhaps you could contact the state Comptroller of the Treasury for an OFFICIAL ruling on the requirement to have a Forestry Management Plan and print his ruling on here for all of us to see. Then have it printed in the local newspapers so people who don't participate on this gossip forum can be educated too.

if you are on forestry,what does the front of your application say? that you have 3 years to have a forest management plan drawn up and turned into the assessors office,( that is 1 of the requirements)if you filled out the application, you had to have it notarized,by law that means you are saying "you have read and understand what is being notarized. It may not be in the handbook,but it damn well is on the application!
