I am the parent of a current 8th grade boy who wrestles. My son has shown some interest in attending Cathedral Prep. I have heard some terrible rumors about the coach there, Paul Cousins, and wonder if anyone else knows this guy?I am not totally comfortable paying for my sons education in the first place. Now I hear rumors about the coaching staff at Prep and I wonder if Collegiate and wrestling for Central is a better choice. Any help?

Wrestling for Central is NOT a better choice. I would trust my own son with Coach Cousins and Hahsey. Coach Jeff Sciabetta is also still around Prep and is a great man. I cant say the same for the Central coaching staff. Who does your son currently wrestle for?

If you want your child to receive the best education this area has to offer - go take a look at Collegiate. The kids at Collegiate are there because they are bright students and they want to learn. The people are Prep are there because they think they are a cut above the rest of us, not necessarily better students. Go look at the two schools. You will see a drastic disparity between the two. Education lasts a lifetime. Wrestling is just an activity.

my son wrestled for a parochial school. I won't say which one, because if I do send my son to Prep I don't want him to be discriminated against. A local journalist told me some very bad stories that happened when Cousins was at Fort Leboeuf. I figured it was rumor, but the journalist stated he witnessed the craziness at the state tournament one year. He said the whole staff was out of control out at Leboeuf. Now I have spoken to two prep parents who have nothing good to say about Cousins or his partner who is a former national champion. I found that odd as one of the Prep parents is the parent of a state medalist this year at PIAA States. He said his son won despite the coaches, not because of them.

As for Collegiate, I believe it's a better school than Prep. If wrestling is not going to be a benefit at either place, I would likely choose the better school, Collegiate. I know the coach there is a hippy and have heard he is a left wing, socialist, liberal but if Collegiate is the better school my son will do well any way Right?

Sorry I agree with Sam. So tell me Johnny, does your son wrestle for Cousins? I have heard fairly good things about Hahsey, but also have heard he is not real involved. I do know schibetta. He is a great guy. So why was he passed over for the head coaching job at Prep twice?

Why would you want your son to participate in a queer sport and attend an F__ked school like Prep. Historically the Prep coaches have anger issues. Your son should attend an online school and find a sport that doesn't include sticking your face in somones crotch.

There is no move that you stick your face in anyones crotch. Is it possible to end up there? Yes. Same can be said for football, basketball or any sport. Heck same can be said while riding a crowded train in a large city, saw a man fall face first into someones crotch at a quick stop on the train in Pittsburgh last summer.

I may not disagree with the anger and school statement. Collegiate may be the way to go. Not hearing from the guy above as to why he defends Cousins.

Cousins only took the job to defend his nephew IMHO. I do not believe Sciabetta ever applied for the H.C. Job. He is a very busy business man and a H.C. job requires a ton of TIME! On top of that, I honestly dont think he is H.C. material. Cousins/Hahsey are both very smart guys with big time wrestling credentials. Jason Beer is doing an excellent job with the parochial youth programs at Gannon. Team Erie(Prep feeder) sent an Area 8 record number of kids to states this season. If you want your son to be a part of something special send him to Prep and dont think twice. They are building a powerhouse wrestling team. The kids that are plotted to attend Prep the next two-three years will make them one of the best in the state.

Better yet talk to some other parents besides Gromacki's. I would suggest Connor Wurst father, or Maybe Dr. Hutzel.

no brainer, PREP is the better school all around. there is no finer education in the state! I've attended PREP and had every one of my children go there as well. to date I have 3 sons, 2 are doctors and the other a lawyer, and all three have state championships in one sport or other! Thankyou CATHEDRAL PREP for teaching my sons true values, morals, and helping them recieve full rides to college. best money I ever spent. the three thousand or so I spent on each of my sons per year at prep was well worth it when they all recieved full rides from multiple colleges and universities! saved me over $300,000+ for colleges. THINK HARD ABOUT YOUR CHOICES FOR YOUR KIDS, LET SOME OF YOUR PLEASURES AND TOYS GO SO YOUR CHILDREN CAN GET THE BEST EDUCATION OUT THERE!

You must be right, no way any kids could get scholarships while going to any other high school but prep.

First off, I don't know the Gromackis. Know who they are, but that is it.

I do not know Beer, but had to seriously question his philosphy as a coach this past weekend. Listened to his instruction to a wrestler who was winning by one entering the third and was somewhat shocked at his suggestion.(The kid lost) He may be fine coach who I was unlucky enough to see at a point that was flawed.

Team Erie? Never would send a kid there. Program is run by a man who is of very questionable charachter IMO. They win at the Junior level but how much of base to compete later is the question. The nephew of the Cousins is one I would use as example. Mutiple time Jr State champ and medalist, yet only one very low state finish in HS.

Schibetta was the person who told me he applied for HC job. Both he and Yori (Thank god he didnt get it) Nice guy but role is limited.

As for who Prep is getting, we will see. Most parents seem to think their kids will go to Prep for free. I have talked to The Chases, the Easters, Heynoskis and McCulloughs. Was told wrestlers get very little help
Full Tuitition is around $7,000 now I believe. A lot of money when Collegiate does very well and for free.

My daughter graduated from Fairview and attends Brown University and pays less than $4,000 per year. Prep does not corner the market on scholarships. We moved in to city after her graduation. If we lived there I would consider allowing him to stay at Fairview as education is more important than Athletics.

My questions on Cousins are this: As stated an Erie Times Employee told me some stories of actions he witnessed. These happened while Cousins was at Fort Leboeuf. The things he explained and claimed to see were unquestionably behavior that should cause a coaches removal. He stated that when The Times started and investigation into allegations Cousins resigned immediatly.

He also noted that Cousins currently works a second job at Fed Ex. This causes him to miss numerous practices. Hahsey by all accounts is an excellent man of charachter but is not overly involved in the HC duties. Was told he even misses tournamnets periodically.

McDowells success under the current staff is documented. Their qualifications are unmatched on the AAA level in our area. I have been told Mcd is also anoption, regardless of where we live. The journalist highly reccomends McDowell under McChesney, Lennox and Cousins brother.

So where to start? Team Erie is not ran by the man your thinking of anymore. Skip Chatt is the guy running things, Has been for the last 3 years or so. Great guy who has been around the sport for 30+ years. And they win at the High School level, not sure where you get your information from. Where do you think McDowell got 5 of there starters from this year.....Team Erie.(Spearman x3, Harris,Hammer) 2 of those kids where just in the AAA state finals this year.(So your argument winning at the next level holds no water)3 or 4 years ago Team Erie had 6/14 AAA NW Region Champs(Havers,Spearman,Milano, Welleck,Parson's, Easter). TE also has 4 guys wrestling at the NCAA D-1 level right now.

You can stop saying "Journalist". Dudley would suggest McDowell beings his kids go there. McDowells problem is that the feeder program they had has fallen apart under Boyds operation. They took 28 kids to sub areas this year. Down only 40 kids from 2 years ago when Lennox was running things. They will have a decent season next season, may even win another D-10 title, Then things are going to fall apart, fast! Funny you dont have to live in Millcreek for your kid to wrestle there. Im sure a tax paying MCD student/wrestlers parents would love to hear that.

Greggory,Ciotti,Jones, and Casto are all planning on attending Prep in the next two years. I have talked to the parents who have already began paperwork. Those guys plus, Ciotti,Wurst,Gromacki,Bizzaro, O'Sullivan will make a pretty solid team the next two years.

So it seem like you just need to decided how big of a role wrestling plays in your sons life. If your son could careless about wrestling at the next level or you dont think he has a chance, send him to Collegiate and he can wrestle Centrals weak schedule with Kev. If you want a tough tournament schedule with good work out partners and a chance to wrestle at the next level.......Prep.

While you have commented many times on Team erie, you still have not commented on the issues that took Cousins out at FLB or if he indeed misses practices at due to a second job.
Lets wait and see if Jones or any of those mentioned ends up at Prep. I do recall hearing a few years back that Harris, all three Spearmans among others would end up at Prep.
Also curious, who are the current 4 D1 wrestlers from Prep? Nice to consider Havers from TE, he was there for two years correct? Are any of the four, starters at the D1 level?
I know Welleck isnt listed on a roster anymore, Havers and Milano don't start. Maybe I should consider moving to Edinboro after all they have 4 D1 guys including one from Penn State.

Guess my decision may come down to who has a better education.

After our experience with Prep - I would say RUN to Collegiate. Prep has become a school where an entrance test is nothing more than signing a tuition check. It is not the cream if the crop as it was 20-30the years ago. The teacher's pay is horriable so you can find better instruction elsewhere. Prep has just as many, if not more, incidents of violence, disruptive students, students that should have ISP's, and students with poor grades. Collegiate is an all around better school. Go take a tour and bring your kid. You eill see the difference as soon as you step foot in the door. Good luck to you and your son!

Hahesy an "excellent man of character", perhaps you should ask his ex wife and call McDowell and ask why he was asked to step down as coach there a few years back.
whatever they say will be a lie. Had something to do with a wrestlers mother and inappropriate actions on his part I believe. Also, ask him about the bar fight when one of his ex wrestlers kicked his arse because of his treatmentof him during high school. Guy is a loser who has people fooled. Stay away.

I'll try - What are you looking for? I can say we were looking at Prep because my son played hockey. Our initial impression was horriable. We walked into the office and there was a kid (maybe 10th grade?) flying off the handle. Swearing, yelling, threating, ect. I am in no way offended by fowl language - I'm pretty good at it myself. But if people believe that place is any better / different than a public school they are nuts. On top of that, you have all of the fund raising that is done. To me there is no benefit to my son. Now if you are black and can play basketball, they will do all they can for you. But if you are white, work, and pay your bills on time - you can go pound salt. We live out in the county and opted to finish up there. My son is a very good student and athlete. But I can't see paying the tuition (Which at the time was in the neighborhood of $6000, I believe). People that think Prep is still the place to send you kids for an outstanding education and scholoarship opprotunities are crazy. The collapse of parochial schools is apparent and can be seen in the caliber of students at Prep. Sure, there are some very good athletes there. But there are just as many "identified" students there as any other school. As a matter of fact - Prep relys on the City to provide "support services" to these students on a monthly basis at the City's expense. City tax payers should love that!! Collegiate will offer your son a lot more educational wise than Prep can even come close to. And for the money - you might as well take that tuition money, dig a fire pit in your backyard and light it on fire. Prep's best days are long behind it. Take a tour and you might see what we have experienced.
