Rep. Mike Kelly is Mr. Frugal on taxes except when it's his dividends at stakeby Meteor BladesFollow

Rep. Mike KellyWith the Casey Anthony trial-of-the-century now history you might think that perhaps the megamedia would find some time to dig into a few real stories for a change. Well, you might think that if you lived in Pollyannaland.
One missed item attaches to Rep. Mike Kelly, the Tea Party favorite who has represented the Third District of Pennsylvania since January. Kelly, who inherited a few bucks from his car dealer dad and married a natural gas heiress, is all about getting Washington to stop spending so much money. He said the day he was sworn in that it would be "absolutely irresponsible" to raise the debt ceiling.

A couple of months later, however, when it came to cutting $4 billion in subsidies for the top five oil companies, Mr. Frugal voted (along with the entire House Republican caucus) not to stop this giveaway. In his case, there was a personal stake in that vote. He owns more than $6 million of two companies that were just bought by one of those immensely profitable oil giants, ExxonMobil.

As ThinkProgress points out, that didn't sit too well with a constituent at a recent townhall meeting in Erie, Penn. He asked Kelly how he could:

"“...justify continuing subsidies for oil companies with record profits while cutting vital services for working families?” The Pennsylvania congressman first responded by citing American Petroleum Institute talking points and argued that we need to help oil companies because they are in many pension plans and retirement portfolios. Kelly then went on to decry what he saw as “class warfare” before being shouted down by constituents who were incredulous that the Pennsylvania congressman was a “rich millionaire” but he wouldn’t end oil subsidies and “fix the tax code”...
KELLY: First of all, let me just ask one thing. Is there anybody in here that has a pension? Anybody have a portfolio? I want you to very carefully look at those portfolios. Those are usually made up by profitable companies.

CONSTITUENT: Why are we subsidizing them?

KELLY: If you really want to understand the whole thing, I would say that, number one, we want companies to be profitable. I said earlier about the class warfare, if we’re going to start classifying,“they’re too rich, they’re too wealthy, they’re too greedy. We don’t get enough, we need more, and we need to have rich people putting more money in. We need, we need, we need, we need, we need, we need, we need.”

"Yeah, yeah, yeah, Congressman. Given your membership in the National Rifle Association, I'm sure you're familiar with the concept of self-defense. That's what your constituents are engaging in, sir. You and your right-wing buddies didn't call it class warfare during the past three decades that have transferred wealth in an upward direction and sliced off an ever-greater share of income for the top economic tier that you inhabit. But now that people well below that tier are resisting the policies that aided and abetted this transfer, you find the label useful. Cribbed, of course, from Heritage Foundation talking points and the daily Foxaganda spew.

Given your financial interests in companies that are fracking natural gas out of the Marcellus shale, we can no doubt soon count on another stellar townhall performance when some constitutent complains about the risk of fracking to their drinking water. Most likely you'll bellyache about how environmental zealots are determined to drive energy companies out of business and damage job creation.

Congressman, you're as convincing as a 3-year-old with cake frosting all over his face. You think the peasants need to know their place and keep silently to it. Too bad it pits out those fine shirts of yours when they refuse.

BS. Thank God we have a system that rewards hard work and not sloth. Take your left wing lies and spins and go to russia. There are no poor in this country, just crappy democrat voting scumbags, all of which have cable TV. There are no people that go hungry for lack of food., Just crappy democrat voting parents that spend the govt check on booze and smokes. People are unemployed due to obamas attacks on businesses that provide jobs. Wake up! You and morons like yourself are the problem and your rants are the opposite of the solution.

Running any business is hard work. That's why your type prefers welfare. Free money and no work! Marriage to anyone is hard work. That's why your type prefers to not get married before you knock up some chick and put her and your kid on welfare.

I think we should investigate the connection between hard work & success .......it seems to be leaving the welfare core base lizards out of the equation for benefits like oil stocks, good jobs, wealth & respect. Liberal Democratic voters & the welfare lizards need a clue.
America is supposed to be a country where hard work provides for rewards. What so many of you people do not comprehend is somebody has to actually earn money in order to pay taxes. The socialist idea it is evil to be successful ...even wealthy is wrong.
What it really boils down to is money/wealth is created through hard work & being successful. The Government cannot create a damn thing & it cannot function unless the citizens it represents are working, successful & paying their respective share of the tax burden to fund the government. The Democrats & Socialists of this country may think all you have to do is wave a magic wand & "POOF by PFM" ..(pure F-ing Magic) the money appears,Sorry kiddies it is not so!
You see there are not very many job opportunities generated by the lizards & slugs that are the core base of the Democratic Party & for damn sure they do not pay anywhere near a fair share of what it takes to run this society & certainly do not have a clue how a society functions.
As for me I want to have some one successful to represent me in the halls of Congress , someone who has a clue & willing to work for the benefit of the people & this country. I do not want & the country does not need any more brain dead liberals, socialist schemers or addle-brained idealists .....we need down to earth hardworking people with proven records for success. I consider anyone who has achieved financial success through hard work is to be respected instead of vilified by welfare wannabes.
I think Mike Kelly is trying to make a difference, works hard & will be our Congressman for a long time....we certainly do not need another starry eyed Obama dreamer like Kathy Dahlkemper.

Building a small family car lot into a major modern auto dealership is hard work and a big deal, especially if you are a leading charitable donor while lending yourself to the school board and city council. You have no clue, buckaroo.

Don’t be foolish, you comply with what the dealership wants. Larger building, signage etc. You can be in the business for 70 years, if you don’t have the cash to play the game bye bye dealership. Where do you think his cash came from?

"Office: Mike Kelly Sold Oil Stocks Before Al Sharpton Rant

A day after the AP and TPM reported Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA) sold off millions of shares in oil and gas industry stock following claims of hypocrisy from ThinkProgress and Al Sharpton, Kelly's office tells reporters the sales happened "well before" a constituent questioned Kelly's portfolio in a June town hall.

From an update to the story published today by the AP:

U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly's press secretary tells The Herald newspaper of Sharon that Kelly's stock in Phillips Resources Inc. and T.W. Phillips Inc. had been "entirely been sold off." Press secretary Julia Thornton said the transactions will be detailed in his financial disclosure forms for 2011.
Thorton told TPM that "the talks to sell" one set of shares in the oil and gas companies started by Kelly's wife's family and sold recently to ExxonMobil began in Spring 2010. Kelly's office did not respond to inquiries about the story yesterday, but called TPM Thursday morning.

Last week, Kelly published an op-ed pushing back on Sharpton in The Hill. The op-ed does not mention a sale of the shares, but does refer to them in the past-tense, as Kelly's office pointed out.

The fact that Kelly had sold the shares was announced nearly a week after the op-ed was published.

Up to now, Kelly's office has been dodgy about the status of the shares. On July 7, PoliticsPA.com published this write-up of the story, which included this comment from Kelly's office:

Kelly's office did not dispute the facts or figures presented by Sharpton. Instead, spokeswoman Julie Thornton said the Congressman's assets were hard-earned, and noted the Kellys' history of charitable giving.
Yesterday's AP story reported Thornton said "she doesn't know when the transactions took place." The details on the sales will be made public in Kelly's 2011 required financial disclosure filing, Thornton told TPM."

Yeah, it sounds like Kelly knows all about hard work - working hard to cover his ass!!!
