That's it...keep up the corporate greed and there will be nothing left of GE in Erie. Give the bigwigs some more shares, clipboard operators more $, and then lay off the people actually working. Brilliant.

What a SAD day for Erie County......If they wouldn't have shipped the parts to China and all of the other countries with their GLOBAL economy thinking......think of how many locomotives would still be built in Erie.....Even the Wind Turbine production is being shipped over the globe.....The selling out of our great country one corporation at a time.....Wonder if the CEO's will still get their 14 million dollar bonuses at the end of the year?

Look, it's this simple. They hire and keep laborers when there is work for them to do filling orders, and lay off workers when the orders dwindle. Nobody likes when that happens. Somehow, GE has managed to stay in business and become one of the world's largest companies despite the ire of union workers who have to go on Unemployment Comp or look new jobs when the pendulum swings the wrong way. We all hope it swings back to prosperity soon; but railing at the "greedy capitalists" will accomplish nothing.

Econ 101 in the choo-choo business.

Economy slowed WAY down.

No money to spend

no money spent - no freight moving

no freight moving - no need for replacement choo-choo's

No rail companies oredering domestic choo-choo's - no business at GE Erie.

Test Friday, 11:00 AM

Being one of the people getting notified, it is a scary time. I am not certain what I should do. These are permanent layoffs. Do I wait for an order and hopefully get called back or do I move away and try and find a job elsewhere? Go back to school? What do you do? I am sure GE will again come back and be very busy around town, but the whole waiting game is torture to think about. Ya, and it sucks to know GE is building plants in other countries and sending the work we used to do here. I guess that is the new way to do business. Exploit people whereever you need to....to make a profit, at the end of the day it is all about the money.

If I am not mistaken this is a cycle that has repeated itself many times over the past 40 years at GE.

As my son says * he works in the automotive building industry NEVER ever turn down overtime and make hay while the sun shines.
Turns out they shut his plant down and he is out of a job for almost a year now.
He has looked for a new job and now has decided that the Army reserves is the way to go and get a better education paid for.
Depending on how far you are down on the list to be called back.. may never happen.

Cite Data for this assertion!(Even if it was stated in the form of a question.)
Please be sure to give accurate information about GE Transportation Systems.
Study up - less than three days before the real test.

Yes. When was the last time Unemployment was this high?

Anyone who worked for GE in the 80's knows Impact '85 and the labor force reduction that proceeded it.

And don't look for a Carl Schlemer roll the dice option. If there are not orders, that plant will close this time.

Never an awkward time for the PSEA to financially rape a community. Kick 'em while they're down you know.

Well since you bring it up, how much did the union spend to help get Oh-Bam-Me elected, using union dues of those now laid off? How was that a good investment? And GE has a "Cadillac" health care plan, in comparison to most. How is Oh-Bam-Me's amalgamation of health care plans going to impact that? Tax it as worker income as some are proposing? Labor spent a lot of their members money putting the current government configuration in place, and I fail to see how it is benefiting the actual working man at all. But then, as radical as I am, I still maintain that anyone who actually works for a living has no damn business being a democrat. Especially since Oh-Bam-Me took office.

I call BS. If you work at GE you would know you have to stay here to be eligible for the UC payment before you're eligible for the IEA check. BTW, you'll be exploiting GE when you cash those checks. They're self-insured for UC.

If you work at GE you'd know that those factories in the customers countries are not doing work that would be done here. Building locomotives in China was a condition imposed by China and EMD is doing their half the order in the same way.
