"Needless to say, the McBride Viaduct has provided a safe passageway for several generations," Priscaro wrote. "It has a glorious history. It also has a tremendous economic impact on the eastside Erie neighborhoods and business community."

This was actually said with a straight face. Anyone that can lie so easily is either a politician, clergy or businessman.

And the answer is......clergy.

That bridge is emblematic of Erie - old, decrepit, and in a constant state of decay.

Tear it down and move forward.

And that is exactly what it's all about to him - history. Wanting to preserve part of his past because they can't let go. Guess what? It's an OLD, CRUMBLING BRIDGE - It's not some landmark. Yes, it has provided travel for generations, but I'm pretty sure that's what bridges do. Get rid of it, it's not the only way to get around town. There are several other routes not far out of the way.

Fat assed Jerry ought to be more worried about jobs. He can rally to keep a dilapidated bridge open but he also rallies to close the coke plant. Let's see no jobs, no people, no need to spend the money on something that only the crack-heads will use anyway.

So maybe its not about the bridge. Maybe its about the need to have a rally.

Maybe Priscaro should just pray up a new bridge.

That's the dumbest thing I've read in years! They already built a new bridge to replace it! Now put on your big girl panties and get a life!

In reading several of the above comments it is clear that most of the posters are mean & evil people who love to attack an individual instead of focusing on the issue. The first McBride Viaduct was built in 1938. The second in 1972. 4,562 vehicles a day were using the viaduct bridge before it was closed on June 2, 2010. Over 200 pedestrians were using it everyday as well. 12,455
citizens have signed petitions in favor of rehabilitating or rebuilding the McBride Viaduct on East Avenue where there has been a bridge connection for over 72 years virtually eliminating all train / motor vehicle and train / pedestrian accidents and fatalities. Over 65 trains a day pass over 5 sets of dangerous railroad tracks below. Thankfully, Fr. Jerry has created one of the largest citizen movements in the City of Erie's History. With so many people in favor of rehabilitating or rebuilding the viaduct with 80 % Federal, 15 % State and 5 % Local Match Money, it would be hard to believe their efforts will be challenged by any significant opposition. Thus far there has been no major opposition declared.

I do not think we need to replace or renovate this bridge because........
1.Many of the industries once served by this bridge are no longer in business
2. What is wrong with the new bridge which joins onto 12th street only about 300 feet or so to the east of where the McBride road joins onto 12th street?
3. The new bridge is wide open , safer for pedestrian traffic not only from vehicular traffic but possible robberies & assaults.
4.The new bridge affords better access east & west for traffic to enter or exit to & from 12th street.
5.The cost to renovate or replace the Viaduct is an expense the cash strapped city & state should not spend for something of such little need or use.
6. If the additional 300 feet or so to the new bridge is such a burden a pedestrian foot bridge over the RR tracks could be built with community donations a whole lot cheaper.
7. There are roads/streets which cross the RR tracks on both the east & westside of town more in need of being bridged then any benefit possibly to be gained from the McBride Viaduct renovation /rebuild.

There is a brand new bridge for people to cross. NO practical reason to fix the bridge. Especially with the economy the way it is. I wonder what is that blow-hard priest's real agenda.

Daily Horoscope for May 17

Aquarius

This is one of the best days, so enjoy yourself. It isn't a day for work or discipline, so you'll struggle if that's what's expected of you. Mix with people who make you laugh or encourage you to see the world from a different angle. And some travel won't go amiss, either.
