Has anyone else experienced the relatively new PNC NSF policy? It works like this - you make a deposit via ATM or check - a certain amount is available and a certain amount is held - for a day or two - they are vague on that - and the weekend adds more days. Then you use your debit card at an ATM or store and PNC lets you withdraw as much as you need - above your available balance - and then charges you $31 if you go over your "available" balance. So - if you are not carefully watching the calendar or your computer and you go over your "available" amount - PNC lets you have the cash but charges you $31. Question - why not deny the transaction? Why not warn the customer? PNC response - they don't want to deprive you - it is a customer service - and then they charge you. Pretty unethical - the "system" let my daughter overdraw by 1.59 and then charged her for that "privledge".

I have friends in PA who use PNC bank and my friend Flo says it happened to her son who deals with that PNC bank....yep big rip off, but then, most banks are big ripoffs, my own bank does the same thing only the price for overdraughs is 29 bucks big deal..crooks with the law on their side...I also know, courts are as crooked as they come as well. Judges, cops, lawyers, even those who work for the state, same thing...God how I wish things in our country would straighten out. It is the same in just about every state I have friends and relatives in. I wonder how these people sleep at night. You have to look hard and long to find honest folks in any position starting in the governments of small towns and villages. It's like they are all on the take???

What do you expect from PNC. The bank that asked for a government bail out then went out and bought 1st National.
with the bailout funds
I don't trust banks and I only deal with credit unions

I bank through PNC. I have never had that problem but I do understand if you are not familiar with the way banks do business you can easily overdraft your account. The answer to that problem is, if you have a check don't deposit it. Cash the check first, then deposit the money.

The answer is, go to a credit union. Banks are all about fees. The only bank I'd go to would be NWSB, or possibly Erie Bank (I'd have to check their policies out).

I had a similar thing happen at National City.. I deposited my check in a branch that was open on a Saturday morning, and then went home and did a check run and mailed out bills. Subsequently, the mail worked faster than the bank, as they tried to hold the deposit and say it didn't post on a business day, although it was deposited to a teller in an open bank... They tried charging $35 for each overdraft, and it was like $200 or something. I worked with a manager at another branch and he waived all but one overdraft fee, which was fair. Never deposit anything on a weekend and expect it to clear until at least Tuesday! Also, sign up for overdraft protection, it's like $3 a month or something. As far as the debit card goes, most of them will let you overdraft without warning as far as I know.. If you can do online banking where you can at least see your balances, check the computer before you head out.(that's what I do..and it makes it really easy to see what checks have cleared your account and what is posted as pending).

Good luck!

Credit unions o the same thing as pnc with the over draft.

Here is another rip off. They give you a certain amount of online transactions for free. i think its 4 a month, if you transfer more they charge you. If you have have free transfers left they will move the money from savings to checking for you should when use your debit card and dont have enough in checking (money has to be in savings though) to cover it. If you dont have transfers left and the above happens its 50 bucks a transfer.

But like the Orginal Poster said they dont tell you.

happened to us over christmas. black friday, saturday and sunday. with all the shopping we did. raked up 300 dollars in transfers fees and didnt know till monday. Go to the store and use debt for a 1.50 bottle of pop and get charged 50 bucks.

Erie Federal Credit Union hard at work.

RIP OFF

From what I heard from my parents, that's what they did in the old days, nobody did business with banks, for one thing they were too poor and didn't have much of anything, depression times you know. We should all do that if we get a couple of bucks to save, now a days, we are dwindled down because of the greed of the fat cats, I hope to God they all go to prison for life as they have ruined so many lives.

Northwest has some stupid policy about allowing access to only a certain amount of a deposit. I also went there one day to cash a check from another party, clearly legitimate, and they would not cash it because it was more than I had in my checking account. Northwest has been good to me otherwise, with mortgages, etc., but their checking account, check cashing rules are stupid. Ninety five percent of my banking is done with a credit union (checking and savings) and will continue that way because of Northwest's stupid policies.

I use Northwest and have never had a problem with them. Checking, savings, mortgages etc. They are the only bank I will use. I have totally free checking and I have never been charged for anything. The one time I had a problem they were very kind and helpful when working it out.

Try Erie Bank. They're terrific. The employees are all polite and friendly, they get to know you. And they have checking accounts that offer no fees and free checks for life. We were originally with PNC - left them pretty quickly. Then we banked for a number of years with one of the credit unions, until they started giving us problems. We moved to Erie Bank and have been very happy.

I just discovered that Erie Bank's interest rate on Savings Accounts dropped down to 2%. I'm disappointed but not surprised.

I am surprised that anyone would deal with PNC - any bank that would have that Mosco woman as VP is off-limits to me. Mosco was responsible, to a large degree, for dragging out the situation with William Garvey. She is or was chair of the board of trustees at Mercyhurst College, and hid the situation from other board members.
Shame on her.
And- use a credit union! Note that in this trillion dollar banking crisis, no credit union was involved, as far as I can tell.

don't spend more money than you have and this problem will go away for you. don't blame the bank for your stupidity.
